Job Description:

For more than 20 years, Fresh Energy has transformed widely held economic and environmental ideals into smart energy policy. Currently our efforts are concentrated in six key areas: retiring coal-burning power plants, improving our transportation system and built environment, increasing renewable energy and energy efficiency, expanding transmission for renewable energy, and regulating carbon pollution. Fresh Energy is an active member of RE-AMP, a regional collaboration of foundations and nonprofits that seek to make significant reductions in pollution that causes global warming, primarily from burning fossil fuels (www.reamp.org). Fresh Energy houses RE-AMP’s Media Center, which consists of media professionals who support the communications capacity of RE-AMP members and produce Midwest Energy News, a daily online source of top news, commentary on energy issues, and original reporting.

The communications director is responsible for the vision and management of strategic communications and media services for both Fresh Energy and the RE-AMP network’s Media Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Devise and implement communications strategies that advance our vision of a clean energy economy, drive stakeholder engagement, and promote the Fresh Energy brand.
  • Manage the creation, development, evaluation, and maintenance of Fresh Energy’s strategic communications plan, ensuring all pieces align with the Fresh Energy brand and support the organization’s policy, program, development, and marketing strategies.
  • Oversee key RE-AMP Media Center functions: model communication and media strategies, training sessions and materials, and administration of Midwest Energy News.
  • Market the RE-AMP Media Center services to the wider RE-AMP network.
  • Act as key member of Fresh Energy’s Leadership Team, which is collectively responsible for the internal workings of the organization, such as managing processes, resources, strategy, staffing, and tracking/meeting outcomes.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a dynamic department of high-caliber professionals in communications, journalism, and media.
  • Oversee creation of an annual budget, and provide leadership to team effort on fundraising for communications and media.
  • Occasional travel required.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred, plus 10 years of management-level experience in corporate or nonprofit communications, campaign or political communications, or framing/message research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic policy advancement.
  • Campaign experience (i.e. marketing, grassroots, political) that demonstrates exceptional leadership and visionary skills, strategic judgment, and the ability to unify and inspire teams to do their best work and exceed anticipated results.
  • Experience managing staff, developing program budgets, and providing fiscal oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to devise, implement, evaluate, and retool projects and strategic initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to navigate an ever-changing media landscape and shape conversations about important social issues. A bias for action and the urgency of winning the news cycle.
  • A firm grounding in traditional communications/media tools and a confidence to exploit and utilize emerging channels.
  • The creativity to craft clear, emotionally compelling stories that engage diverse audiences and inspire them to act.
  • Passion for the mission of Fresh Energy combined with qualities of transformational leadership.
