Overview

The Land Trust Alliance is a national conservation organization whose mission is to save the places people love by strengthening land conservation throughout America. The Alliance works with Congress to pass tax incentives and funding that help landowners to choose conservation over development.  The Alliance serves as a university for land conservation that trains the people who do the work to conserve cherished farms, forests, parks and trails. It strengthens community-based land trusts by providing workshops, online learning, research, standards, and accreditation services. The Alliance’s conservation defense program helps land trusts ensure that conserved land stays protected forever. The Alliance works with the media to promote land conservation and engage more Americans in saving our most treasured places.

Summary Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Individual Giving, and working closely with other members of the Alliance Development Department, the Donor Relations Specialist will help build new and stronger relationships between the Alliance and its supporters. The Donor Relations Specialist will do so by overseeing and managing strategic donor events and staff travel to engage donors.   

The Donor Relations Specialist will lead the building of a national events strategy, and working with volunteers and other staff, oversee implementation of the events themselves. This position will expand the Development Department’s capacity to conduct events and see that the events schedule is adequate to achieve departmental donor engagement goals. The Donor Relations Specialist will oversee event-related logistics, as well as post-event follow-up. 

The Donor Relations Specialist will also serve as the facilitator for fundraising travel and follow-up strategies for the Alliance’s senior management team and external gifts officers. The Donor Relations Specialist will coordinate travel strategy across the organization and oversee all facets of travel planning and execution.


Responsibilities

Special Events

  • Manage the Alliance’s special events program (approximately 24 small events and 3-4 larger events per year) with responsibility for developing, organizing, and executing all current donor cultivation and fundraising events. Travel for significant, large events, will be expected.  Smaller events can be supported from D.C..
  • Work in collaboration with the Development team to create an annual schedule of special events that will ensure that the department’s donor engagement goals are met (e.g. number of new prospects engaged, number of contacts with current donors, etc.).
  • Plan and execute events that will help cultivate new donors and sustain contact with existing Alliance donors and key stakeholders.
  • Manage the Alliance’s VIP track at Rally (the Alliance’s annual national conference) with responsibility for developing, organizing, and executing all cultivation and fundraising events, meetings, and activities.
  • Manage the Alliance’s annual National Council retreat with responsibility for developing, organizing and executing all facets of the three-night, three-day retreat weekend.
  • Assist with donor cultivation events around the annual board retreat, Rally board meeting, and February annual board meeting as needed.


Travel

  • Oversee national fundraising travel program for the Development Department to see that donor engagement goals are met.
  • Liaise with Development and program staff on fundraising travel priorities and generate quarterly trip lists for review.
  • Oversee appointment scheduling of fundraising trips, as well as coordinating briefing materials necessary for each appointment.
  • Facilitate the fundraising travel debrief process and coordinate and track the follow-up activities from each fundraising trip. This will include working directly with the President, Executive Vice President, and Vice President on their trip follow-up and , as necessary, with the external relations officers.


Other

As time permits, this position will also provide support of the Individual Giving effort as a member of the team. Responsibilities will include coordinating national charitable registration process and the Earth Share program, as well as other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ experience in event planning/event management experience.
  • Experience in a major gift program preferred.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and the ability to think strategically.
  • Motivated and enthusiastic, with the ability to own projects while asking for assistance when needed.
  • Ability to think through and create/follow timelines.
  • Excel at multi-tasking with various projects and deadlines; attention to detail a must.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends for events as necessary.
  • Strong interest in land conservation.
