Job Description: 

IMT is looking for an experienced leader to oversee the next phase of the organization’s strategic growth. The Chief Operating Officer will lead the execution of IMT’s strategic plan and operations in conjunction with the Executive Director and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer.

This position requires an individual who can help others at IMT deliver measurable, cost-effective results. S/he will need to deliver both leadership and flexibility in overseeing the daily and long-term strategy of IMT. A strong interest in the environment, energy policy, and/or green buildings; a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree; and 5+ years’ experience in a relevant role are required.


The Chief Operating Officer will lead the implementation of the strategy of the organization, including the following specific tasks.

  • Maintain processes enabling IMT to achieve its strategic plan and goals
  • Oversee fundraising and development: articulate organizational strategy, work with development consultant, board, and staff to develop IMT’s fundraising growth plan
  • Develop and maintain IMT internal strategy implementation, including staff work plans, staff meetings, team meetings, and performance assessments
  • Develop and coordinate IMT’s Strategic Advisory Committee, comprising IMT staff and select external partners
  • Coordinate relations with the IMT Board of Directors
  • Coordinate professional development opportunities for staff members (in conjunction with Chief Financial and Administrative Officer).

Qualifications and skills

The successful candidate will be mission-driven and have demonstrated ability in scaling up an organization and overseeing processes that fully support the capacity of a bright,
diverse staff. Additional qualifications include:

  • Exceptional capacity for managing and leading people, ability to connect with staff on an individual level and to develop and empower staff
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with strategic development and planning, analysis, and organizational design and effectiveness
  • Strong quantitative skills and attention to detail
  • Results-oriented approach
  • Ability to react effectively to changing needs of a growing organization
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in management, policy, real estate, or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of IMT’s field of work (energy efficiency in buildings, real estate, and related policies and market considerations) strongly preferred.
