Job Description: 

The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) is seeking a temporary, full-time field biologist skilled in waterbird identification and survey methods. The position will run from April to September 2013 (with possible extension) and will be based in Milpitas, CA. The biologist will conduct waterbird surveys and water quality sampling at salt evaporation ponds in support of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project (www.southbayrestoration.org). He/she will also assist with SFBBO’s California Gull Research and Monitoring and Avian Disease Prevention programs (www.sfbbo.org/science/index.php).
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct waterbird surveys and water quality sampling at South Bay salt evaporation ponds
Lead walkthrough censuses of large gull colonies, conduct gull counts and behavioral surveys at landfills
Lead boat trips to collect dead, diseased, and injured birds in South Bay sloughs as part of an effort to prevent avian botulism outbreaks
Work with SFBBO staff, partner agencies, and volunteers to coordinate field work
Enter, proof, and manage data collected
Train and supervise volunteers
Assist with equipment maintenance and other SFBBO projects as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or related field
Excellent waterbird identification skills, including familiarity with gulls, shorebirds, and waterfowl of the San Francisco Bay, and the ability to estimate large numbers of birds quickly and accurately
Strong work ethic, organizational skills, and attention to detail
Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable personal vehicle
Off-road driving experience (SFBBO truck provided for off-road driving)
Good physical condition and enthusiasm for long days in the field, often starting at sunrise
Willingness to tolerate harsh field conditions (mud, sun, dust, salt spray)
Ability to navigate using maps and handheld GPS units
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Solid computer skills, including working knowledge of MS Office Suite
Effective oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience conducting field work in the San Francisco Bay
Experience driving and trailering small motor boats
Familiarity with hand-held water sampling and monitoring equipment
First aid certification and completion of U.S. Coast Guard boating safety course
Bird-handling skills and/or background in wildlife rehabilitation
Volunteer management skills
Compensation: This is a full-time, temporary position without benefits. Pay is $15/hour. Housing is not provided. A SFBBO vehicle or reimbursement for use of a personal vehicle will be available for pre-approved, work-related travel. SFBBO will also provide most field gear, including a spotting scope.
