Job Description:  Overview:

Stantec’s Environmental Management team in Sidney, British Columbia provides a wide range of environmental services in a variety of sectors, including mining, pipelines, electrical transmission, oil sands, wind farms, and conventional oil and gas. With more than 100 professional, technical and support staff in our office, we provide extensive knowledge and capability in both regulatory planning and scientific specialties. Our services include environmental assessments; wildlife, vegetation and soil surveys; ecosystem mapping and modeling; GIS and information management; wildlife habitat evaluation and modeling; development of management plans and monitoring programs; mine reclamation; aboriginal consultation; archaeology; and regulatory permitting.

We are seeking exceptionally talented and enthusiastic senior specialists with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our experienced and skilled team and advance their career.

Stantec’s Sidney office (11-2042 Mills Rd), has an immediate opportunity for a dynamic Senior Vegetation Ecologist to join our vibrant and growing terrestrial team.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Management of and potential participation in:
    • Vegetation surveys (with a focus on terrestrial ecosystem identification, analysis, and mapping, rare communities, rare plants, wetlands, and old forest)
    • Vegetation components of environmental assessments,
    • Vegetation monitoring programs,
    • Data management, statistical analysis, and interpretation,
    • A variety of natural resource projects.
  • Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, including ecosystem data analysis and interpretation
  • Senior level discipline management, including supervision of teams and delivery within a multi-disciplinary project team.
  • Baseline and environmental assessment report preparation.
  • Client relations and business development.

Senior review and quality assurance and control.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Minimum of Bachelors or Masters of Science (preferred) in a related discipline from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience which must include environmental consulting in the mining and/or oil and gas sectors.
  • Knowledge and experience with both provincial and federal legislation and regulatory agencies (e.g., BC EAO, CEAA, NEB).
  • Knowledge and experience working within the various provincial and federal environmental assessment frameworks (e.g. BCEAA, NEB, CEAA).
  • Experience scoping, completing and participating in the regulatory review process for the vegetation component of large multi-disciplinary environmental assessments in the mining, power, and/or oil and gas sectors.
  • Demonstrated TEM experience and knowledge.
  • Substantial experience with vegetation and ecosystem survey protocols.
  • Vegetation survey experience including taxonomy and species identification.
  • Experience with rare plants and/or wetland function characterization and assessment would be an asset
  • Experience working in western and northern ecosystems, particularly the boreal.
  • Knowledge of vegetation mitigation measures, including compensation planning, restoration and reclamation, and effectiveness monitoring.
  • Experience working with GIS spatial data and analysis.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills and strong verbal communication.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with the Association of Professional Biologists of British Columbia as a Professional Biologist.
