Job Description:  Overview:

Responsibilities:

Stantec’s Environmental Services practice seeks a senior fisheries/marine biologist at the Mid-Level project management level to provide project management, business development and other client services for natural resource projects located primarily in New England. Project management responsibilities include developing project proposals, managing projects and budgets, and performing and overseeing technical work. The successful candidate would help to develop projects in both marine and freshwater systems and help grow Stantec’s Aquatic Services Division. The position will coordinate studies with inter-related disciplines such as hydrology, geomorphology, wetlands, and wildlife studies. The candidate will oversee teams conducting sampling design, data collection, data management, statistical analyses, reporting and presentation for a variety of fisheries projects including freshwater and marine studies. Specific responsibilities include mentoring junior level staff, successfully managing projects and clients, business development, managing large field related projects involving fisheries management, fish passage studies, sediment sampling, impingement and entrainment sampling, eelgrass restoration or SCUBA surveys.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (MS preferred) in marine science, fisheries biology, natural sciences, or a related field.
  • Applicants must have extensive experience designing and directing large, complex, multi-discipline fisheries projects, including management of field studies.
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience related to aquatic science management, consulting, and/or environmental planning.
  • Project and budget management experience.
  • Experience with local, state and federal environmental permitting in New England
  • Specific experience with Section 316b and 316a of the Clean Water Act, hydropower, FERC relicensing and NPDES permitting.
  • Specific field experience with SCUBA, sediment sampling, electrofishing, eelgrass restoration radio telemetry, PIT Tagging and impingement and entrainment sampling.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Strong work ethic, sense of humor, high ethical standards and a desire for team success.

Desired:

  • Strong technical writing abilities, solid statistical background, and effective presentation skills are necessary for this position.
  • Proficiency using computers to record field data, communicate via email, write and manage reports, track work progress, and communicate with clients.
  • Ability to organize and set up complicated arrays of radio telemetry and PIT tag receiving equipment.
  • Ability to develop competitive proposals and track project budgets and schedules.
  • Ability to work productively and cohesively both alone and in teams.
  • Ability to manage personal workload, contracts, and other project elements to complete projects on time and within budget.
  • SCUBA certification and Captains License

Assets:

  • The Project Manager will be a self-starter who can work well with other disciplines and within a team.
  • They will have the ability to translate scientific analysis and findings into readily understood lay terms and communicate effectively with regulators, the public, and other project stakeholders.
  • Adaptability and attention to detail are important.
