Job Description: 

NatureBridge seeks an experienced and skilled Accounting Director to join the NatureBridge National Directors Team. 

Founded in 1971 and based in San Francisco, NatureBridge is the largest residential environmental education partner of the National Park Service. Its mission is to inspire personal connections to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it. NatureBridge currently operates in six national parks: Yosemite National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Olympic National Park, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Channel Islands National Park, and Prince William Forest Park. Each year, NatureBridge serves more than 30,000 participants through residential field science, youth leadership, and teacher training programs. Principal Duties & Responsibilities

The Accounting Director is responsible for managing the accounting function to ensure that all external and internal financial reporting obligations of the organization are met.  This position reports to the Controller and is responsible for developing and monitoring sound internal controls to ensure accurate and timely reporting.   The successful candidate will work closely with the Controller and the Chief Financial Officer to manage a comprehensive and effective accounting system in an organization with smart leadership committed to implementing major changes to its existing systems and processes. 


The Accounting Director manages the accounting function to ensure that the activities are carried out with a high level of efficiency, precision, and integrity.  Specific duties include:

  • Supervise and manage all accounting activities of the organization, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and payroll
  • Maintain and monitor system of internal controls to ensure accurate accounting and reporting
  • Prepare external financial statements in a timely and accurate manner, manage the annual audit process, and ensure that federal, state, and local tax and reporting compliance requirements are met, including the filing of all appropriate tax returns
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed, work with direct reports to establish goals and objectives for each year, and monitor and advise on progress to enhance professional development of each staff member

Finance, Budgeting, and Banking

  • Support Controller and Chief Financial Officer in the annual budget process
  • Ensure timely bank and investment account reconciliations

Fundraising Reporting and Communication

  • Track and report on the organization’s temporarily restricted funds
  • Work with Development staff to ensure the accurate preparation of grant budgets and follow-up reporting of actual expenditures applied to grants

Experience, Competencies, & Education

We seek at least five years of relevant work experience, including:

  • At least three years of leadership experience in nonprofit financial management
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, plus five or more years accounting experience, including staff supervision
  • Very strong computer skills, including standard word-processing and spreadsheet applications; SAGE MIP Fund Accounting, Microix, and Adaptive Planning experience preferred
  • Solid understanding of GAAP for nonprofits and ability to present information and analysis clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form, especially with respect to financial statements and ongoing performance measures
  • Ability to manage a system of internal controls in a growing/changing organization
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, and the general public
  • A strong commitment to NatureBridge’s mission

Additional preferred experience and skills

  • CPA preferred

Communication skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate with both financially sophisticated and non-financial users
  • Ability to present information and analysis clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form, especially with respect to financial statements and ongoing performance measures
