Job Description: 

The Organic Trade Association (OTA) seeks candidates for the newly created full time Director of Science Programs for the Organic Center (TOC) its non-profit affiliate science center housed in OTA’s office in Washington, DC. The TOC is an independent nonprofit 501(c) (3) operating under the administrative auspices of OTA. The affiliate’s mission is to conduct credible, evidence-based science on the health and environmental benefits of organic food and farming and communicate those benefits to the public.

OTA is the membership-based business association for organic agriculture and products in North America. OTA is the leading voice for the organic trade in the United States, representing over 6,500 organic businesses across 49 states. 

Working under the supervision of OTA’s Executive Director/ CEO and in collaboration with its Executive Vice President, the Scientific Research Program Manager will provide scientific, strategic and managerial leadership of the affiliate science center.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Project management of ongoing science programs and related communication activities.
  • Provide leadership in project formulation and management, grant writing, and report writing.
  • Coordination of the Scientific Advisory Board and its annual work plan and agenda.
  • Management of outside scientific contractors and spokespeople.
  • Grant writing
  • Bringing science content and insight to the communications, outreach, and fundraising activities.
  • Building alliances with like-minded organizations and public institutions; develop and maintain effective collaborations with leading scientists and scientific associations.
  • Administrative duties will include budget development and tracking; managing consultants; and organizing the affiliate’s role in scientific meetings and industry conferences.

Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in a related field of study such as nutrition, public health, and agronomy is required. Proficiency in analytical and communication tools. Demonstrated experience leading and managing projects and programs. The Science Director position requires five to seven years of experience in scientific and public health work, including management experience. Experience managing the launch of new center-like initiatives and with scientist outreach and mobilization strategies and/or issue campaign planning and implementation are helpful but not required, as is experience organizing and hosting public policy or educational forums.

Qualities for the Successful Candidate:
The position requires a comprehensive understanding of the appropriate use of scientific and technical information in public understanding as well specific scientific understanding of organic and sustainable agriculture and its public and environmental health benefits. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required, including: a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and credibly with public audiences, policymakers, leading scientists and other experts; and a demonstrable ability to effectively build and manage cross-disciplinary teams on tight deadlines in the service of achieving science-based public engagement objectives. Project and program management experience is essential. A successful candidate must have a commitment to independent, accurate, scientific research and communication of that research.

This is an exempt position and the salary is commensurate with experience. OTA offers a generous benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance and 401k.
