Farming Apprentices learn methods and practices involved in producing diverse crops of vegetables and flowers without chemicals. Apprentices receive training and practical experience in greenhouse work, field work, harvesting, cultivation, irrigation, care of livestock, general farm maintenance, and CSA distribution. Apprentices also learn about preserving, crop scheduling, harvest management, farm equipment care and use, and local marketing. We expose interns to the hands-on elements as well as the decision-making that goes on at the farm, so that over time they develop an understanding of the behind-the-scenes processes of small-scale vegetable production. Apprentices also participate in visits to other local farms, and organized discussions of the concepts of sustainable agriculture. Farming Apprentices are expected to work hard alongside the Farm Managers 5 1/2 days a week, with a rotating animal and greenhouse chore schedule requiring some additional weekend hours. Positions Available:
Compensation for Farming Apprenticeships: Farming Apprentices receive a monthly stipend, on-site housing, and produce and eggs from the farm. Stipends begin at $500 a month for the first month, $600 for the next two, and $750 for the following month(s). Additional Educational Benefits: Phillies Bridge Farm Project participates in the Mid Hudson Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training(CRAFT) program, through which apprentices have the opportunity to attend weekly meetings at various local farms. Each meeting includes a farm tour and a lesson around a specific topic (i.e., irrigation, season extension, compost, no-till farming). Apprentices may also attend any of the adult workshops offered by Phillies Bridge Farm Project free of charge. Desired Qualifications:
