Job Description: 


The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) is looking for Communications Specialist candidates to join the Institutional Advancement team as writer, editor and content creator for the organization. The Specialist will be responsible for working with ISC staff to write and edit the materials we use to connect with donors, funders, and partners. This person will develop stories of our work, and support program staff in finding and telling these stories in a variety of ways. We are especially interested in candidates who are comfortable switching between writing styles and environments, and have experience with social media.

Ideal candidates will have several years of professional experience writing and creating materials for print and web, a solid understanding of effective writing and editing principles and an eye for detail. Experience with international work is a definite plus, as is experience with interviewing and storytelling styles. The right candidate will be comfortable in our fast-paced environment and able to juggle multiple projects and priorities easily (and with a sense of humor).

Our current areas of programmatic growth include strengthening democratic institutions and citizenship in transition countries; helping communities in the U.S. and Asia become more resource efficient and transition to low-carbon economy; and supporting sustainable community development – particularly in areas recovering from natural disasters or that are vulnerable to climate disruption. Founded by Madeleine M. Kunin in 1991, ISC is based in beautiful, picturesque Vermont, a state that values grassroots democracy and environmental stewardship. ISC has an office in Washington, DC, and international offices in China and Serbia.



  • A minimum of 2 years professional experience in writing and editing;
  • Ability to develop and manage project timelines and closely track projects with internal and external stakeholders and vendors;
  • Must be competent in the MS Office Suite and all social media tools; experience using video is a plus;
  • Comfortable writing for a variety of audiences, from the US government to the general public;
  • Strong communications and time management skills;
  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts preferred.
