Job Description: 

Founded in 1992, Urban Solutions is a dynamic and productive economic development non-profit organization based in San Francisco. Our mission is to strengthen underserved neighborhoods by supporting small businesses, job creation, diversity and sustainability. Two neighborhoods where we concentrate most of our services are the Fillmore Street/Western Addition and Sixth Street/South of Market.

Position

Urban Solutions seeks a marketing assistant to organize Fillmore/Western Addition small businesses and support their marketing efforts to increase foot traffic in the neighborhood. The contract period is from October 2012 through June 2013. 
        Under the direction of the Director of Small Business Services and Communications Director, the Marketing Assistant for Community Outreach will perform services in tandem with the neighborhood Marketing Assistant for Publicity. 
        This not an entry-level position. This is a paid contractor position designed for a professional with experience working with community-based organizations in economic development. Funding for this position is made possible by the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

Responsibilities


Working with small businesses in the Fillmore/Western Addition:

  • Help facilitate and support the creation of The Fillmore Business Association:
    • Establish relationships with the merchants in the Fillmore District.
    • Scheduling meetings, sending notices/agenda, maintaining minutes and other logistics.
    • Provide ongoing staffing for the Fillmore Business Association.
  • Convene a minimum of four (4) merchant meetings supporting the activities of the Fillmore Business Association. This may include:
    • working with the executive committee to prepare meeting agendas
    • conducting outreach to encourage and ensure active attendance
    • supporting merchant marketing efforts such as the creation of a discount book promoting Fillmore businesses.
    • prior to convening the first meeting seek merchant input regarding the best format for the meetings and the type of business mix to include to ensure the long-term success of the Business Association.
  • Organize the Fillmore Business Association to promote participation of merchants at merchant meetings and events.
  • Work with businesses along the Fillmore corridor to help develop coupon booklet.
  • Represent the Fillmore Businesses/merchants at appropriate marketing events citywide.
  • Participation in symposiums and events throughout the city as required.
  • Assist with monthly and end of project reports.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Small Business Services.

Marketing the district, working in collaboration with the Marketing Assistant for Publicity:

  • Build connections with the travel industry to encourage tourists and tour buses to stop and visit the Fillmore District.
  • Post announcements and help execute targeted email blasts throughout the year about events and business promotions in the Fillmore/Western Addition.
  • Distribute 10,000 postcards during the contract period, including local shops in the southern, central and northern Fillmore Street areas, Japantown, and at vendor booths at festivals citywide.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications or related preferred.
  • Minimum three years' professional experience working with community-based groups.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience with Salesforce and Vertical Response a plus.
  • Excellent communications skills: written, verbal, and in person.
  • Experience working with diverse groups. Experience working with community-based organizations. Experience with Western Addition groups a plus.
  • Ability to work and think independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work remotely and achieve set goals.
