Employer:  ACE - Alliance for Climate Education.
Categories:  IT/Web/Technology
Travel Required:  None
Job Type:  Full Time
Experience Required:  2-3 years
State/Province:  CA - California
City:  Oakland
Salary:  non-disclosed
Job Description:

Alliance for Climate Education (ACE) is the national leader in high school climate science education; its mission is to educate and inspire youth to take action to curb the causes of climate change. ACE accomplishes this mission through dynamic, award winning multimedia school assemblies, in-school environmental clubs, campaigns to take action and leadership opportunities reaching well beyond campus grounds with 22 local ACE Educators in 15 metro areas across the United States.

ACE is a young, dynamic nonprofit organization making climate science interesting and fun. We are data-centric and cloud-services reliant, passionate and results-oriented, and believe that today’s students can be today’s climate leaders. Since 2009, ACE has reached 1.3 million high school students.

ACE employees get great benefits, a passionate team of coworkers and the power to change the world for the better.

Job Description

ACE prides itself on using technology to make the most of what it can do – with a Flash-based multimedia assembly, Drupal and Wordpress-based website, and the backbone of our operations on Salesforce.com – not just for the standard CRM or donor outreach, but for almost every aspect of what we do.

We need a general technologist who is interested in helping us find the right tools and use technology creatively, stretch his or her own skills in strategy, web and Salesforce and is still happy to spend a few hours a month helping educators in the field figure out what’s going on with their MacBooks when needed.

Salesforce: About 60% of your time. You’ll help us run the day-to-day of our Salesforce implementation, strategize on the best ways to use Salesforce to get the information the organization needs and help us streamline our Salesforce implementation to make it easier for everyone in the organization to use – and easier for you to manage. You’ll work with internal stakeholders to create functional specifications for changes and manage outside contractors for large-scale changes. At first, there will be some basic tasks that you’ll streamline through new developments, adding apps and changing processes. We’ll look to you to find new ways to make the most of our Salesforce investment.

Web and hosted services: About 30% of your time. From Google Docs and gsites to WordPress and Drupal, we’re using a lot of platforms to make it easy for everyone to contribute to the ACE story. Keeping them up to date, using the right tools and managing contractors for large-scale changes are the nuts and the bolts of it, but we want more than raw skills. Your ideas on how we could do more – either with what we have or something new – will fuel ACE’s growth, and yours.

General tech support: Maximum 10% of your time. Lots of things pop up in any organization. Whether it’s testing new versions of the Flash-based assembly or talking someone through how to defrag a hard drive or replace a projector bulb, our ideal candidate is of the “teaching people to help themselves” school of tech support and isn’t afraid to say when he or she just needs to send a machine into the shop. You don’t have to know how to do it all, but have to have the openness, comfort and Googlefu to figure out how to get to the next steps on what goes weird with tech around here.

We’re a mostly-Mac shop and you should be familiar with and comfortable working on a Mac when needed (although whether you use a Mac or a PC is up to you).

You’ll work at our Oakland office, just three blocks from 19thStreet BART.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively to translate operations, development and marketing needs into functional specifications and scope large-scale changes to technology infrastructure
  • Define, communicate, and manage the release / enhancement process to develop and update systems
  • Strategically identify and add Salesforce applications, WordPress plugins and Drupal enhancements where they solve identified problems
  • Manage outside development consultants and Salesforce Foundation relationship where needed
  • Manage custom Salesforce dashboards, fields, objects, permission controls, triggers, and workflows and approvals
  • Help us extend our use of Salesforce.com into every place it makes sense (and help us research, identify and roll out the best tools where it doesn’t)
  • Drive integration between Salesforce and other systems
  • Train staff on the use of Google hosted services, Salesforce, WordPress, Drupal, ExactTarget and set up new accounts
  • Run reports and help staff set up reports they can run for themselves
  • Importing data where it isn’t yet automated, manage data storage, data backup and cleanup
  • Assist with other technology platforms such as Google Apps, current web platforms and webform applications
Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Experience with Salesforce.com, including Salesforce automation tools
  • Experience in tech support, including the support of a mixed PC/Mac shop (or all Mac office)
  • Comfort with Google Apps, Microsoft Office, Mac OS X, WordPress, HTML
  • An interest in usability and automation
  • An understanding of the proper handling of personally identifiable data
  • Intellectual and professional curiosity that fuels your career
  • A belief that the power of students, with science education, skills and confidence can be ready for their future and the issue of climate change

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience using Salesforce beyond CRM
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations
  • Familiarity with Visualforce, Exact Target, Drupal, CSS, HTML, social media integration and/or Wordpress
  • An interest in gamification, mobile applications and using technology as a platform for making things simpler, more social and more fun
