Job Description:

his is a newly created position directing the Environmental Education Collaborative in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The EE Collaborative seeks a Director who will provide strategic vision and creative leadership in addition to performing general management duties for a dynamic alliance of regional organizations working to strengthen and build the field of environmental education.

The Director reports to the Executive Vice President of NatureBridge, an environmental education nonprofit that serves as the Collaborative’s secretariat. NatureBridge is responsible for the Collaborative’s consistent achievement of both its mission and its financial objectives.

About the Environmental Education Collaborative

In 2011, leading practitioners and researchers developed a deeper understanding of the barriers that have prevented environmental education from becoming more fully embraced as an essential element of our formal and informal education systems. Multiple strategy sessions with relevant thought leaders—including practitioners, academics, public officials, and funders—took place across the country and revealed that the field of environmental education faces challenges in the areas of quality, relevance, ownership, and collaboration.

Practitioners, academics, and education leaders are now convening in the San Francisco Bay Area as the Environmental Education Collaborative to develop a strategic plan to build capacity in the design and delivery of the field. Thus far, the Collaborative has focused on mapping the field of environmental education and developing a Theory of Change regarding how to raise the standing of Environmental Education and to significantly increase the breadth and depth of program impacts across the field in an integrated manner. In particular, the Collaborative addresses the need for:

  • Enhancement of the quality of environmental education through increasingly weaving research-based best practices into program models;
  • Expansion of relevance so that environmental education is available to and influenced by people from socioeconomically and culturally diverse communities;
  • Ownership and participation by a wider range of sectors and stakeholders (e.g., for-profit, public, philanthropic) in the design and delivery of the environmental education system; and
  • Increased collaboration, which will facilitate unity in message, vision, and standards as well as growth in the scope and scale of environmental education programs.

The Collaborative will work within and beyond the field of environmental education to develop a portfolio of mutually reinforcing strategies and a plan to put them into action. Through these efforts, the Collaborative will work with the broader field and catalyze meaningful movement toward widespread integration of environmental education that strengthens the foundation for preserving the planet we all share.

Position Summary

The Environmental Education Collaborative Director will lead members in developing goals and incorporating academic research and peer insight into strategies to strengthen and grow the field of environmental education.
