Reports to: To be determined based on ultimate program scope Location: Anchorage preferred, but an alternative Alaska location is negotiable The Organization: The mission of Wild Salmon Center (WSC) is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. We devise and implement practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity. Wild Salmon Center is an international organization with a staff of 33. The Organization has programmatic activities in the Russian Far East, Sakhalin, Kamchatka, Japan, the Olympic Peninsula, and the Oregon North Coast. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center. The Position: This is a unique opportunity to build a conservation program from the ground up in Alaska, where the Wild Salmon Center seeks to expand its work by establishing its physical presence with local staffing and collaborative work on the ground. The Senior Manager of the Alaska Program is responsible for the development, day-to-day leadership and management of the Organization’s programs in Alaska, including close coordination with WSC policy initiatives related to the health, abundance and diversity of Pacific wild salmon and the important fisheries they support. The position will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of a multi-year conservation program for the state that entails fisheries management and habitat conservation components, working in close cooperation with federal, state, tribal and NGO partners. The ideal candidate will be a bright conservation professional with a demonstrated record of accomplishment influencing state or federal natural resource polices and experience in Alaska, preferably working on salmon fisheries conservation and management issues. S/he will be mission-driven, possess natural partnership building and communication skills, and have the ability to negotiate, influence, and collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders. Relevant experience working successfully on fisheries management and landscape-scale conservation initiatives regarding salmon or related fisheries issues is strongly preferred, including bi-partisan policy and legislative advocacy. Hours of Work: This is a full-time regular position that is exempt from federal Fair Labor Standards Act overtime rules.
