SEEA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of promoting and achieving energy efficiency through networking, program activities, and education. The results of increased energy efficiency will be a cleaner environment, a more prosperous economy, and a higher quality of life in the southeastern United States. SEEA, a wholly--‐owned subsidiary of the Alliance to Save Energy, is based in Atlanta, GA, and works in the 11--‐state region of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia plus the U.S. Virgin Islands. SEEA developed close partnerships with existing energy organizations and businesses in the Southeast, including investor--‐owned and public utilities, wholesalers, retailers, state governors and energy offices, state public utility commissions, environmental and energy nonprofit organizations, energy service companies, manufacturers, universities, consumer groups, low--‐income advocates, and residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural consumers. In April of 2010, SEEA was awarded $20M by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Better Buildings Neighborhood Program (BBNP) to develop local energy efficiency programs to provide comprehensive services in community neighborhoods to promote and administer energy efficiency and renewable technologies. Through an RFP process, SEEA awarded the following cities DOE funds to participate in the program: • Atlanta, GA • New Orleans, LA • Jacksonville, FL • Charlottesville, VA • Huntsville, AL • U.S. Virgin Islands • Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC • Charleston, SC • Decatur, GA • Charlotte, NC • Nashville, TN • Hampton Roads Metro Planning District, VA These cities have committed to collectively retrofit thousands of residential and commercial facilities over 36 months. Each city is independently designing and implementing their programs. However SEEA is committed to providing tools and services on a regional basis to facilitate their efforts, including: • Marketing and communication materials that are informed by the latest data on consumer attitudes and decision making on energy efficiency projects• A business process management software system that provides data collecting, reporting, energy measurement and verification, and quality assurance functions; • A regional financing program – specifically a Loan Loss reserve Fund – to provide support to the cities’ local loan programs. SEEA contracts with vendors and partners to assist the cities in the design, delivery and evaluation of the program. The DOE has also established a Technical Assistance Provider network which provides support to grantees in the areas of finance; program design and implementation; technical issues; and performance contracting. Additionally, SEEA is contracted to manage six similar programs in the States of Alabama and Virginia under the DOE’s State Energy Program (SEP). POSITION DESCRIPTION The Associate will have responsibility and devote the most substantial part of his/her time assisting in the development and deployment of the communications and marketing plan for SEEA’s Better Buildings program, which includes providing significant support and relationship management to sub grantee community--‐based retrofit programs. Specific activities include deployment of consumer--‐based social marketing strategies, and tasks related to the website, newsletters and other mass communication, branding and public image activities. The Associate will also work with the Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Team to provide similar support to overall SEEA communications and branding projects. A considerable degree of independent initiative will be required, especially related to managing marketing and public relations work for the BetterBuildings and SEP city “accounts.” The candidate will also need to work effectively with team members from SEEA and other organizations, and to express complex ideas in clear, compelling written and verbal form. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Marketing and Communications: collaborates with members of the SEEA Programs & Services and Communication teams to develop and execute the regional marketing, communications, website, collateral and social media strategies for the SEEA BetterBuildings Neighborhood Program with special emphasis on consumer based social marketing and other innovative methods and technologies to drive awareness of and participation in local sub grantee and regional programs. o Works with local city partners to support their individual communications and marketing efforts and ensure coordination with the SEEA program. Media Relations: Leads media relations activities to drive participation in BetterBuildings and SEP programs locally, and awareness of the larger SEEA brand to ensure the organization is viewed as the Southeast’s premiere energy efficiency authority. Assists BetterBuildings and SEP cities with pitching stories, events, and reports that drive coverage of their work. o Manages media lists for SEEA and BetterBuildings cities. Distributes media kits, and follows up to make sure they are received and covered or placed. Writing and Editing: Writes a range of materials about BetterBuildings and SEP programs and SEEA initiatives including news releases, media advisories, blogs, white papers, public policy materials; newsletter content, case studies and other materials as needed. Works closely with senior staff to support various SEEA initiatives by drafting and editing articles bylined by SEEA staff and partners solicited from outside organizations. Provides editorial assistance to staff as needed. Provides support in the production and content of SEEA’s various publications including newsletters and internal collateral REQUIREMENTS Excellent analysis, research, and verbal and written communication skills; Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work successfully with limited direct supervision, and an orientation to meeting goals and deadlines; Demonstrated interpersonal, problem--‐solving and teamwork skills ,and the ability to collaborate with different levels of an organization, both internally and externally; Strong computer skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Illustrator, Convio, internet research, and SalesForce; Familiarity with community and consumer based social marketing; and A Bachelor’s degree and 2--‐4 years of experience in communications and marketing is preferred. Background that is desirable but not required includes: Working knowledge of energy efficiency programs; Experience with buildings sector and/or energy efficiency programs and projects; and Agency or other relevant experience in managing multiple clients and deadlines.
