Within the Buildings Engineering Practice Area, the Stantec Sustainable Solutions Team (S3) provides consulting services at all scales of the built environment and at every stage of the building life cycle based upon the principles and goals of sustainability and stewardship. The S3 service areas reflect the interconnected systems-based nature of sustainability and include LEED Consulting, Building Performance Simulation, Renewable Energy design, Strategic Sustainability Consulting and Climate Change services. Responsibilities:

Stantec’s Calgary Office is currently seeking a qualified candidate to undertake an intermediate role as a sustainability specialist. Reporting to the team leads of the Sustainable Solutions team, the purpose of this position is to provide direction and leadership in the execution of sustainability projects – specifically LEED facilitation, simulation and alternative energy projects. Our Building Performance Simulation staff guide projects toward the highest performance outcomes while staying within budgetary and scheduling constraints. We achieve this by providing input and feedback to the design team from the concept stage through to construction. Our involvement can extend into the operations phase through measurement and verification and facilitates a holistic systems perspective of the building and supports an integrated approach to design.

The candidate will provide energy simulation services related to buildings and community energy systems, for our clients and train junior staff. The qualified candidate will have background in energy-efficient system design and simulation, LEED rating systems, energy analysis studies, and energy management & incentive programs. A sound knowledge of HVAC and lighting systems, building control systems, energy conservation measures, greenhouse gas emission, building physics, and simulation programs is also expected. You would bring good communication skills, technical strengths, project experience, ability to provide excellent client service and a commitment to sustainable design.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support projects through services including energy and thermal modeling, LEED documentation, researching sustainable building design strategies, and writing reports
  • Provide building performance modeling that analyzes energy and thermal performance of new and existing commercial, institutional, and residential buildings
  • Facilitation of LEED projects
  • Supervise and mentor junior technologists and engineers in project execution
  • Work with clients and design teams in an integrated design approach to identify appropriate design strategies geared towards improving energy performance, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort; provide ongoing analysis through design and construction
  • Prepare building analysis reports to present results of energy and thermal modeling, greenhouse gas emissions analysis, and research findings; prepare and deliver presentations to clients and/or design teams
Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience such as building envelope and energy-efficient system design and simulation
  • P.Eng. or eligibility for APEGGA membership is strongly preferred
  • CEM (Certified Energy Management) is strongly preferred
  • Experience with the following simulation software: eQUEST and/or IES , TRNSYS, EE4, DOE-2, EnergyPlus; RETScreen, HAP, TRACE, and/or Hot2000 experience an asset
  • Experience integrating BIM tools such as Revit with simulation tools such as IES an asset
  • Strong professional verbal and written communication skills -ability to communicate in a timely manner appropriate with clients and building design team members
  • Understanding of LEED building rating systems required; LEED AP with specialization preferred
  • Experience with thermal comfort analysis, CFD (for natural ventilation and displacement ventilation), daylight simulation, life-cycle cost analysis, and/or existing building auditing preferred
