POSITION TITLE: Communications Director
About Island Conservation
Island Conservation is a Santa Cruz, CA based international non-profit with regional programs, and offices, in Chile, Ecuador, Australia, Canada and the Bahamas. IC has a staff of 36 employees and is growing. The mission of Island Conservation is to prevent extinctions by removing invasive species from islands.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Communications Director will lead all communications and marketing efforts for Island Conservation. He/ she will lead development of Island Conservation’s external and internal communications strategies, including our global effort to protect the world’s most threatened island species and island ecosystems. In collaboration with the Management Team, he/she will be responsible for branding, marketing, public relations, strategic (internal and external) communications, and outreach. This position will report to the Executive Director, serve on Island Conservation’s Management Team, and will be based in Santa Cruz, California.
RESPONSIBILITIES Organizational
·Collaborate with the Executive Director and the Management Team to develop communications strategies that will broaden Island Conservation’s reach and deepen our impact, including our global effort to protect imperiled species and restore ecological integrity of priority islands.
·Develop and execute communications, marketing, and external relations plans in support of island conservation.
·Identify and develop key messages, positioning, and outreach strategies and materials in support of priority partnership development, external relations, policy, and philanthropy.
·Identify significant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support Island Conservation’s work, and create and execute plans to take advantage of these opportunities.
·Oversee organizational response to media and other inquiries.
·Serve as executive editor for the organization’s external communications.
·Develop a plan for internal communication in collaboration with the Executive Director
Global Campaign
·Lead effort to name and brand the Global Campaign, the threatened island biodiversity database, and its analytic products.
·Help create messages and products to build awareness in key, targeted constituencies.
·Develop case statements, promotional materials, and content for major fundraising proposals.
·Collaborate with the Regional Directors to develop regionally focused communication strategies and products.
Conservation Operations
·Lead the development, creation, and execution of project and crisis communication plans.
·Develop project fact sheets and other outreach material for projects.
Philanthropy
·Develop case statements, promotional materials, and content for major fundraising proposals.
QUALIFICATIONS
·A strong commitment to Island Conservation’s mission.
·Minimum seven years of communications/marketing experience preferably with the NGO sector.
·Degree in communications, journalism, public affairs, or a related field.
·Excellent organizational skills.
·Ability to both work independently and take direction from others, the ability to solve problems with limited supervision, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
·Exceptional oral and written communications abilities, including public speaking and a facility for translating complex information for a broad range of audiences.
·Impeccable integrity.
·The ability and flexibility to travel.
·Ability to work in different cultural environments and be sensitive to cultural differences.
·Fluency in Spanish, French or both.
DEMONSTRATED EXPERIENCE
·Significant communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations.
·A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.
·Experience coaching and supporting senior leaders as spokespersons.
·Experience garnering earned media in an international corporate or nonprofit environment.
·Recognition as an entrepreneurial leader combined with a proven track record of success and accomplishment.
·Proven managerial talent in the execution of communications and marketing plans, including budgeting, staffing, and performance management.
·Experience in developing collaborative communications efforts with external stakeholders.
·Demonstrated experience with Non-Profit Communications that target specialized audiences: Donors, Governments, International Aid agencies, Multilateral Organizations, etc.
OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
·Knowledge of complex environmental issues and interest in nature conservation.
·Exceptional analytical, strategic, and tactical ability, as measured through execution of projects that meet and surpass expectations.
·Superlative interpersonal skills, including a willingness to listen to internal and external constituents and learn from their best ideas.
·Intellectual curiosity, approachability, and openness to input from all levels of staff.
·High energy level, personable, trustworthy, diplomatic, and respectful.
·Proven team player and leader; able to motivate and inspire staff as well as colleagues to work as a team.
