Job Description: 

Position Title:                        Stewardship Assistant

Department:                         Conservation

Location:                               Cape May Court House, New Jersey.

Reports to:                             Stewardship Project Coordinator--South

Job Classification:               Part-time, temporary (weekly hours will vary by season, averaging about 10 hours per week, beginning immediately and running through October 2012)

 

Job Description: The Stewardship Assistant will assist the Stewardship program staff with the management of wildlife habitat on the grounds of the NJ Audubon Center for Research and Education in Goshen, NJ. The position’s responsibilities will include helping to maintain the grounds for the benefit of wildlife and the enjoyment of visitors. The assistant will help implement the existing habitat management plan by planning volunteer days, recruiting volunteers, and supervising volunteer workdays, focusing on the planting of native vegetation and the removal of weeds. The assistant will also seek out and test new approaches to reaching habitat enhancement goals, with the approval of the Stewardship Project Coordinator. The Stewardship assistant may be asked to research costs and methods for various types of habitat enhancements and grounds maintenance.

 

Other Major Responsibilities:

  • Participates and supports departmental staff members with land management tasks, including, but not limited to: tree and shrub planting, weed and shrub removal using hand tools, mowing, nest box installation, small pond maintenance, and other wildlife habitat projects.
  • Recruits volunteers to act as stewards of the CRE grounds
  • Plans, prepares for, and supervises volunteer workdays to maintain landscaped portions of property.
  • Speaks with volunteers and visitors as appropriate to explain habitat enhancement goals and methods.
  • Identifies additional methods for reaching habitat management goals.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet the needs of the conservation department and organization as required. 
  • Participates with other mission area staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the assigned work station. 
  • Completes other tasks as requested.

 

Knowledge/Skills:  

  • Experience with volunteer recruiting and coordination and ability to instruct and guide diverse volunteers of varying ages and abilities.
  • Experience with or ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment, including planting bars, trimmers, hand saws, shovels, and weed pulling devices. Ability to use power tools including mowers and weed-eaters.
  • Possess effective time management skills.
  • Excellent speaking skills essential. 
  • Ability to complete tasks independently when necessary. 
  • Computer literacy and working knowledge of basic software programs, including Microsoft Word and Web browsers.
  • Knowledge of native wildlife-friendly plants and wildlife habitat principles.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • A motivated self-starter who is also a strong team player.

 

Qualifications: 

  • College degree or college enrollment in forestry, wildlife ecology, natural resources or other closely related field preferred.
  • Experience with or strong interest in wildlife-friendly gardening.
  • Familiarity with flora, fauna, and characteristic ecosystems of New Jersey.
  • Must be able to perform field work under all types of adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and in rough terrain carrying equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. 
  • Must be willing to travel to different locations in Cape May County as required. This requires a reliable vehicle and a valid New Jersey Drivers License.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet special needs of the department and the organization.

 

Starting Date: Immediate.

 

Salary: Hourly rate, commensurate with experience. This part-time position does not include benefits.
