Job Description:  Overview:

Stantec’s Environmental Services team in Calgary provides a wide range of environmental services in a variety of sectors, including pipelines, electrical transmission, power plants, oil sands, wind farms, and conventional oil and gas. We help our clients to identify and respond to opportunities and threats within constantly changing regulatory and corporate environments. Our more than 200 professional, technical and support staff provide extensive knowledge and capability in both regulatory planning and scientific specialties. We lead environmental assessments, regulatory strategy, public hearings, and permitting and licensing in support of regulatory applications. Our team members may be involved in air quality studies, noise impact assessments, fisheries, vegetation and wildlife studies and assessments, mapping and modeling. We are seeking exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our team and advance their career.

Stantec's Burnaby office has an immediate opportunity for an Intermediate Wildlife Biologist to join our Wildlife team.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead or participate in wildlife related field work
  • Participate in the preparation of wildlife studies, implementation of field sampling protocols and preparation of reports
  • Manage and conduct wildlife assessments and related studies for multi-disciplinary projects in the oil & gas, mining, power and pipeline sectors
  • Manage and prepare wildlife components of environmental impact assessments.
  • Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget.
  • Data analysis and management
  • Wildlife discipline project management
Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Minimum of 5 years of wildlife related field experience. Consulting experience considered an asset.
  • Experience leading teams for the completion of environmental assessment work, including both fieldwork and reporting.
  • Highly developed computer skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience working in western, prairie and northern ecosystems
  • Degree in wildlife biology or conservation, environmental biology, renewable resources or ecology
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal legislation including CEAA, BCEAA, and the Wildlife Act.
  • Wildlife identification skills and experience conducting field surveys in British Columbia.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) under a variety of conditions. Availability to be out of town for up to two weeks at a time for remote field trips.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and under deadlines

The following would be considered assets:

  • Highly developed breeding bird identification (sight and sound) skills, and nest searching experience
  • Amphibian survey experience
  • Familiarity with statistics and modeling (HSI, RSF, etc.)
  • H2S Alive, First Aid, ATV training
  • Registered as a Professional Biologist in BC.
