Description

The Institute for Sustainable Communities is seeking a Vice President for Operations and Finance. This individual is responsible for the development and oversight of ISC’s finance, operations, and information management systems. As a member of the Management Team, this position provides the leadership, management and vision necessary to ensure that the organization has the proper financial and operational controls, the necessary administrative and reporting procedures, and the required information technology and systems in place to effectively grow the organization, ensure financial strength and accountability, and operational efficiency. This position reports to the President and functions as designated officer-in-charge of the organization’s daily activities in the absence of the president.

Responsibilities

 

  • Work closely with the President, other members of the Management Team and the Board of Directors to set and achieve strategic goals and objectives for the organization
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s fiscal function including the strategic as well as the day to day oversight of financial operations
  • Establish financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions across all domestic and international offices.
  • Evaluate & advise on levels of financial & legal risk during decision-making particularly with respect to operations in foreign countries.
  • Develop knowledge management policies, procedures, and systems to assure that critical organizational information is retained and shared across the organization
  • Develop strategies to assure that present and future information technology and facilities needs of the organization are met.
  • Assure the availability of timely and accurate analysis of budgets and financial reports in order to assist the President, Board and other senior managers in managing their responsibilities
  • Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization
  • Establish credibility throughout the organization and with the Board as an effective problem solver; be viewed as approachable and as a mentor to people in financial, technical and operational issues
  • Identify enterprise-wide opportunities & challenges, working across teams on innovative approaches & solutions
  • Allocate resources to strategically invest in both immediate term growth and long term stability
  • Establish & monitor performance reporting systems; providing reports on organization’s operating condition

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to be a proactive, strategic leader with in- depth knowledge of finance, operations, human resources, and international development .
    • Ability to create and oversee a multi-year, multi-million dollar budget
    • Good understanding of US federal regulations, financial and legal structures, including experience in opening and closing international offices
    • Proven experience in establishing systems that ensure optimal home/field office functions
    • Ability to manage a diverse international work force
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent presentation skills

 

    • Experience with public-private partnerships and social entrepreneurship strategies would be a plus.
    • Knowledge and ability to manage information technology and knowledge management systems.
    • A quick study with excellent judgment.

 

Qualifications

 

      • Advanced degree in finance, business, public administration, or other appropriate discipline
      • A minimum of ten years relevant professional experience and five years senior management experience.
      • Non-profit management experience.
      • Strategic, proactive leadership skills.
      • Works well in a collaborative, team environment.
      • Experience with international development programs and/or managing international offices.
      • Demonstrated ability to manage large, complex projects to successful conclusion
      • Commitment to the ISC mission and goals
