Introduction to PEC

The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) was founded in 1972 with the purpose of preserving important attributes of the Northern Piedmont region of Virginia. Those key attributes are the open spaces, natural viewsheds, historic features, agricultural activity and the clean air and water that make living, working and visiting the region so special. Protecting these attributes, while recognizing the importance of economic vitality, has always been, and remains our core organizational goal.

Description of Position

Web Writer - Content Manager - Social Media Specialist.

The Communications Specialist will promote PEC’s mission and programs through the production of communications pieces across all needed platforms. The Communications Specialist will help to advance the following communications goals, outlined in the PEC Strategic Plan:

  1. Build a network of reliable activists, donors and members
  2. Influence decision-makers to reach better outcomes
  3. Increase positive awareness of PEC and build support for PEC programs
  4. Change behavior and foster an ethic of good stewardship

This position will have an online focus. The Communications Specialist’s responsibilities will include:

  • Writing, editing and developing engaging and user-friendly content for PEC’s website
  • Upholding content quality and maintaining consistent writing style and voice across the website. Collaborate with PEC field staff to develop and launch relevant advocacy campaigns and email messages.
  • Promoting web content through social media, email messages and networking both online and in person.
  • Staying current with social media trends and best practices.
  • Using analytics and user data to improve web content and market online products effectively.
  • Contributing to PEC’s Communications Calendar in order to schedule and organize timely and relevant web content and email messages.
  • Responding to public questions and information requests via email and social media.
  • Assisting with other communications projects as necessary, including writing articles for PEC's quarterly membership newsletter - The Piedmont View.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strong communications skills, both written and oral, including the ability to compile, condense, write, edit and proof written materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic HTML. Experience with CSS preferred.
  • Experience producing and editing content using a content management system. Experience with Joomla preferred.
  • Proficient in Adobe Photoshop (or similar software) and Dreamweaver.
  • Proficient in social media outreach and other online marketing of products.
  • Strong organizational and storytelling expertise. 
  • Ability to organize, coordinate and manage diverse activities and deadlines
  • Experience in campaigning, organizing or advocacy preferred
  • Experience in the non-profit sector a plus
