About the Yosemite Conservancy:
Providing for Yosemite National Park is our passion. We could not accomplish our mission without the
generosity and dedication of our supporters. With them by our side, we have completed more than 330 projects
providing over $61 million to the Park. Our visitor services, trail and lookout restorations, education and
naturalist programs reach millions of individuals each year who leave inspired by new knowledge and experience
of one of the most beautiful places on earth, Yosemite National Park.
Our Development Department is comprised of a San Francisco-based team of specialists who connect with donors
whose interests include land and water conservation, environmental education, national parks, public lands, and
scientific research in service of protecting natural resources.
As part of this effort, we are looking to add a Major Gifts Officer to our group who will focus on working with our
large group of donors in the Greater Los Angeles area. Our Southern California board members and major donors
are passionate about helping to enhance our majestic Yosemite National Park…and it is truly a joy to help make it
all possible in the role of a Major Gifts Officer. The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) cultivates and engages with
designated individuals in a portfolio of current and potential major giving donors, the majority of whom have
aligned philanthropic interests and the ability to make outright or progressive gifts of $100,000 or more.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Manages the Southern California donor portfolio of 125 prospects with objective of completing 100-125
one-on-one donor visits per year to convey opportunities to support Yosemite Conservancy.
 Solicits donors and prospects in the Southern California region for major gifts, including assets and noncash gifts, in order to increase funding for Yosemite Conservancy projects and programs and/or enrich the
donor’s relationships with the organization.
 Engages, supports and communicates effectively with executive management, trustees, program and
project directors and other teams in achieving fundraising objectives.
 Develops strategies for top rated prospects in the portfolio and implements tactics to ensure that donors
have ample opportunity to engage with the organization, receive timely project and program status reports
and recognition opportunities.
 Maintains excellent knowledge of Yosemite Conservancy priorities, Park management goals and is able to
articulate these clearly in meetings with donors.
REQUIREMENTS:
 Bachelor’s degree in English, Marketing, Communications or related field.
 Three to five years of major gifts fundraising experience.
 Driven, self-motivated with experience working in remote home office.
 Ability to travel to San Francisco upon occasion; ability to drive to all areas in the greater L.A. area (and
expanded So. Cal areas, as needed).
 Experience in articulating program and project information and tailoring to interests of donors.
 Strong interpersonal and verbal skills with ability to establish in-person appointments with potential donors
by phone, email and letters.
 Experience in creating and presenting at philanthropy social gatherings hosted by a major donor.2/15/2012 Major Gifts Officer
 Confident consensus builder with proven ability to negotiate complex, high profile or sensitive situations.
 Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns and major
and planned gifts.
 Computer savvy - MS Office, Skype, internet research skills, database – Raiser’s Edge, preferred.
 Ability to work in high-visibility, fast-paced and stressful environment.
 Willingness to travel frequently and on short notice to Yosemite National Park and donors’ offices and
event / meeting sites.
 Excellent written communications and verbal communications with a gracious and polished demeanor.
 Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Yosemite Conservancy; knowledge of /and
enthusiasm for National Parks, conservation and protected areas.
