The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) is seeking a full-time Science Programs Director. SFBBO is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats through science and outreach. Located in Milpitas, CA, SFBBO has 5 full-time 3 part-time staff and an annual budget of $500,000. Establishing in 1981, SFBBO has 31 years of experience conducting avian research and monitoring in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our research contributes to land management decisions that address local conservation challenges of concern to resource agencies, policymakers, and California citizens. Key projects in our Science Program includes those that support our long-term involvement with Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project such as the Snowy Plover Recovery Program, monitoring of pond-dependent waterbird populations, and breeding population studies of colonial waterbirds and California Gulls. In addition, we have operated the Coyote Creek Field Station, our bird banding station, since 1982 and have several ongoing studies focused on riparian and marsh songbirds. Our team of 100 long-standing, dedicated volunteers greatly enhances the reach of our science. Qualifications Candidates should possess the following qualifications: Ph.D. or M.S. in ecology or a related field with extensive experience in field ornithology. Experience with experimental design, statistical and spatial data analysis, and database management. Excellent leadership skills and with experience supervising and training staff and volunteers in standard ornithological field techniques and data management. Experience preparing technical reports, manuscripts, and writing grants. Excellent communication skills with experience working collaboratively with government and natural resource agencies and communicating with the public. Experience working with plovers, endangered and threatened species, and/or experience overseeing a nest monitoring program highly desirable. Job Description The Science Program Director leads SFBBO’s Science Program and reports to the Executive Director. Oversees current Science Programs and develops new initiatives and programs to build upon current datasets and expertise. Manages program data by overseeing database development and data collection, entry, proofing, and storage. Analyzes data and produces reports and manuscripts. Mentors, supervises, and evaluates biologists and interns; hires program staff. Conducts field work as part of the Snowy Plover Recovery Program. Administers grants and contracts, tracks project deliverables and due dates, communicates with project contacts and collaborators, tracks and maintains project budgets.
Develops proposals, writes grants, and maintains and develops funding streams. Participates in networking and partnering meetings, presents scientific research, and represents SFBBO at professional meetings. Participates in outreach and fundraising activities as needed.
