JOB SUMMARY: The Grants Associate’s primary responsibility will be to collaborate with a team of fundraising and conservation staff to submit grant proposals and reports that meet the specific requirements of foundations. In addition, the Grants Associate will work to ensure smooth functioning of the Development Department by providing administrative support, coordinating institutional communications with foundations, and evaluating prospective foundation supporters.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drafting and revising proposals and reports in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Development and relevant staff in the Conservation Department, and ensuring they comply with each foundation’s specific guidelines and are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Proofreading documents and spreadsheets to be sent to foundations.
  • Maintaining up-to-date foundation records in the organization’s database and helping the Vice President of Development Operations manage a schedule of cultivation activities, foundation submissions, and reporting dates associated with grants.
  • Drafting and editing organizational correspondence with American Rivers’ current and prospective foundation supporters, including gift acknowledgements and mass mailings.
  • Identifying and researching prospective foundation funders in order to help grow the organization’s foundation revenue.
  • Collaborating with staff in the Conservation Department both in Washington, DC and in field offices across the country to keep them informed of their upcoming development responsibilities and to help develop timelines to ensure task completion in a timely manner.
  • As needed, work with the Development Assistant to process pledges and gifts from foundations, and ensure accurate foundation record-keeping in the development database.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in nonprofit development or similar field.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; experience with grant writing preferred.
  • Highly organized, with an ability to meet multiple and overlapping short-term, immediate and long-term deadlines.
  • Ability to work as a team player and take initiative in assisting other staff members with projects.
  • Proven demonstration of and a high skill level with attention to detail, with prior experience in copyediting, proofing and finalizing documents preferred.
  • Ability to synthesize information in order to promptly provide senior staff members with concise yet thorough research on prospective foundations.
  • Strong and flexible work ethic and a willingness to work extra hours as needed.
