Southwest Conservation Corps:

The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a non-profit service organization built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is in its 14th year of engaging youth in conservation service projects on public lands.  SCC’s mission is to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.  It accomplishes this mission in two ways:

  1. SCC engages and trains a diverse group of young women and men.  In 2010 SCC engaged over 1,000 young people in residential and day service programs providing them with paid service work, job training, education, life skills and the opportunity to make a difference.

  2. SCC completes conservation projects for the public benefit.  In 2010 SCC completed over 300,000 hours of service preserving and enhancing wildlife habitat, maintaining recreational trails and open space, protecting communities from wildfire, and restoring public lands.

Position Description:

The Logistics Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to logistically support crews with equipment, tools, vehicles, and food.  Evening, overnight and weekend work required.  A flexible schedule is a must.  Reports to the Program Director.

Logistics Coordinator Responsibilities

Program Logistics: 

  • Manage and organize a clean and efficient operations center (the office and shop).

  • Supervise and manage de-rigs and re-supply of tools, equipment, food, and first aid essentials for all crews.

  • Purchase and repair hand tools, chainsaws and forestry equipment camp equipment, uniforms, and supplies as needed.

  • Purchase and organize food while maintaining a clean and functional storage area.

  • Purchase supplies for new programs as they arise.

  • Maintain regular inventory of all equipment, tools, uniforms, food, and first aid supplies.

  • Maintain chainsaws and chainsaw parts inventory, perform basic chainsaw maintenance.

  • Manage repair and maintenance of the entire fleet of vehicles and driving training system.

  • Manage off-site vehicle parking areas.

  • Purchase supplies and equipment to maintain the office and the shop.

  • Maintain and create organizational systems for logistical management

General Administration:

  • Work within the established program budget and report purchases to the Program Director.

  • Complete regular field site visit reports and complete any other necessary documentation.

  • Meet regularly with Program Director to go over program purchases, budget, and expenses.

Field Support and Risk Management:

  • Check-in with Crew Leadersnd Crew Members during field visits.

  • Provide guidance and emotional support to crews and crew leaders.

  • Enforce all SCC Policies and Procedures.

  • Manage on the ground project quality and quantity by providing technical assistance to crews as needed.

  • Respond to crew emergency situations.

  • Participate in a weekly on-call system for crews in the field.

  • Participate in staff trainings both as a trainer and/or trainee.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with SCC or other youth conservation corps, professional trail and/or fire crew, or conservation-based program required.

  • Clean (Insurable) driving record, current driver’s license, and positive outcomes of background check.

  • Advanced skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance.

  • Good organizational, managerial and problem-solving skills;

  • Excellent communication and teaching/mentoring skills.

  • Strong conflict resolution and team building skills preferred.

  • Able to work independently and also to motivate others.

  • Current CPR & WFR or WFA certified; has demonstrated good judgment in emergency situations.

  • Computer literate (MS Word and Excel proficient).

  • Desire to spend time in the company of youth and young adults; ability to instigate fun!

Essential Functions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to focus. The employee is occasionally required to drive an SCC vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Position requires overnight and weekend travel and work. This job will require a flexible schedule, including working on weekend days. The successful candidate will be able to go out into the field for overnight/multi-night visits most anytime, as needed.
