The Appalachian Mountain Club, the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization, seeks an individual with a passion for the outdoors and demonstrated success in leading a Human Resources function in a fast-growing, dynamic environment. The Challenge With more than 150 full-time employees located in Boston, the North Country of New Hampshire, and at several other locations in the Northeast, as well as a seasonal workforce of several hundred more, the AMC offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for an experienced human resources generalist. AMC’s mission is to promote the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountain, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. In serving that mission, AMC’s employees do everything from maintaining trails to publishing books, from operating overnight destinations to advocating for conservation policy. AMC’s Director of Human Resources must be comfortable serving this wide-ranging, passionate, and hard-working group of employees through responsibilities from organizational development to tracking and maintaining background checks. The Position AMC’s Director of Human Resources will be called upon to lead a human resources function that enhances AMC’s strong employee culture while meeting the highest standards for quality in recruiting, organizational development, compliance to employment and other regulatory requirements, benefits and payroll administration, and employee relations. This position reports to the Vice President for Operations & Chief Financial Officer. Headquartered in Boston, the successful candidate will bring to the position a comprehensive understanding of human resources practices and principles including benefits, compensation, employee relations, performance management, recruiting, on-boarding, and staff development. Candidates should demonstrate all or most of the following qualifications:
AMC anticipates that this work will be performed primarily in a general office setting, with minor physical effort or strain required. Travel across the AMC’s region will be required. Work is normally performed while seated, and requires freedom of movement. Staff must be able to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs and operate standard office equipment. Staff may spend extended periods of time at a computer terminal, on a telephone, or operating other office machines. This position requires an ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment and manage deadlines. The work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements. Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions carrying up to 30 pounds of gear is preferred.
