Job Description:

The Appalachian Mountain Club, the nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization, seeks an individual with a passion for the outdoors and demonstrated success in leading a Human Resources function in a fast-growing, dynamic environment. AMC is looking for an individual who values an employee-oriented, high performance culture where recruitment and ongoing development of an outstanding workforce is a central goal and every task, large and small, that supports the safety, development, and performance of the workforce is considered a critical component to the mission and success of AMC.

The Challenge

With more than 150 full-time employees located in Boston, the North Country of New Hampshire, and at several other locations in the Northeast, as well as a seasonal workforce of several hundred more, the AMC offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for an experienced human resources generalist. AMC’s mission is to promote the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountain, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. In serving that mission, AMC’s employees do everything from maintaining trails to publishing books, from operating overnight destinations to advocating for conservation policy. AMC’s Director of Human Resources must be comfortable serving this wide-ranging, passionate, and hard-working group of employees through responsibilities from organizational development to tracking and maintaining background checks.

The Position

AMC’s Director of Human Resources will be called upon to lead a human resources function that enhances AMC’s strong employee culture while meeting the highest standards for quality in recruiting, organizational development, compliance to employment and other regulatory requirements, benefits and payroll administration, and employee relations. The Director of Human Resources’ responsibilities include:

  • Supporting an active recruiting and staffing strategy that places qualified, enthusiastic individuals from a diversity of backgrounds in full-time year-round positions while also facilitating the multiple, seasonal hiring (600+) that AMC does each year.

  • Developing and overseeing personnel policies, documents, and logistics to ensure that policies are both effective and understandable; tools such as compensation schedules and dashboards are up-to-date; human resources activities are compliant with relevant law; and personnel files are accurate and include required background checks.

  • Counseling leadership and senior staff on organizational development, effective staffing, professional development, and personnel planning as necessary.

  • Coordinating employee communications to promote open, constructive, and transparent policies, emails, staff retreats, intranet postings, and peer-to-peer collaboration across and throughout the AMC staff community.

  • Managing all benefit plans to ensure a robust, competitive, yet cost effective benefit package that is reviewed annually and is understood and utilized by employees.

  • Providing advice and counsel to managers and staff to ensure an appropriate and timely resolution of all employee-related conflicts and other personnel issues.

Qualities and Qualifications

Appalachian Mountain Club staff members share a passion for the outdoors and a genuine belief in the mission of the organization. Only candidates with a commitment to AMC’s mission will be considered. AMC is a terrific place to work, and the organization welcomes candidates with qualities such as:

  • An infectious enthusiasm for one’s work and the patience to explain its value to others;
  • Vision;
  • A sense of humor;
  • Persuasion coupled with realism and respect for others;
  • Creativity;
  • An optimistic willingness to keep trying;
  • Respect for different cultures, races, and perspectives; and
  • An ability to collaborate, build consensus, and let others lead.

This position reports to the Vice President for Operations & Chief Financial Officer. Headquartered in Boston, the successful candidate will bring to the position a comprehensive understanding of human resources practices and principles including benefits, compensation, employee relations, performance management, recruiting, on-boarding, and staff development. Candidates should demonstrate all or most of the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree with preference for candidates with graduate training in business, organizational development, or human resources.
  • Five plus years in human resources at a rapidly growing nonprofit, for profit, or social enterprise with significant and expanding responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment law, benefits administration, effective recruiting, and compensation and training.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Facility with technology and social media including all elements of Microsoft Office, and preferably ADP, HRIS, and related systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including an unwavering commitment to confidentiality and sensitivity in negotiating employee challenges.
  • Experience at AMC’s outdoor destinations preferred, willingness to travel to all AMC worksites, including backcountry locations, required.
  • Personal car, driver’s license, and the ability to travel across the region.

AMC anticipates that this work will be performed primarily in a general office setting, with minor physical effort or strain required. Travel across the AMC’s region will be required. Work is normally performed while seated, and requires freedom of movement. Staff must be able to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs and operate standard office equipment. Staff may spend extended periods of time at a computer terminal, on a telephone, or operating other office machines. This position requires an ability to work in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment and manage deadlines. The work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements. Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions carrying up to 30 pounds of gear is preferred.
