Job Description: 

The BlueGreen Alliance seeks a California Policy Organizer to work in our San Francisco office. The BlueGreen Alliance (BGA) is a national organization that brings together our eight national partners (eight major unions and four national environmental groups) as well as labor federations, environmental and social justice organizations and clean energy businesses to advocate for clean energy/green jobs. 

We focus our advocacy on programs and policies that result in the development of the clean energy and green economy with a special emphasis on: 

  • Climate change solutions that create quality jobs across several sectors, including scaling up renewables, energy efficiency, clean energy manufacturing and sustainable transportation 
  • the promotion of strong, effective regulatory policy; green chemistry; safe food; green schools and other sustainable practices that impact workplaces and communities 
  • Workers’ rights 

JOB SUMMARY

The California Policy Organizer will work closely with the California Director to carry out our legislative and campaign advocacy work as well as our coalition building priorities throughout the state and in Sacramento. The person who fills this position will report to the California Director, and work closely with other BlueGreen Alliance staff and the California BlueGreen Alliance Steering Committee members. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Work to implement our clean energy jobs advocacy priorities. These will be largely, but not exclusively, focused on clean energy advocacy at the state level. 
  • Work to more deeply integrate California Steering Committee member organizations into our advocacy work, and work to expand our coalition across the state. 
  • Assist with special projects and initiatives that the BlueGreen Alliance organizes, such as the Good Jobs, Green Jobs Conference and the annual “Right Stuff Awards” dinner. 
  • Make public presentations, including preparing and presenting testimony at legislative hearings. 
  • Provide some level of administrative support to our organizing and outreach efforts in California (e.g. set up meetings, maintain contacts database, etc). 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree
  • 3-5 years experience driving legislative and/or or issue-based advocacy campaigns
  • Familiarity and previous experience working with labor unions and the environmental or environmental justice movement is preferred
  • Familiarity with clean energy, climate change and other environmental issues preferred and legislative experience is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience speaking before groups
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to maintain productive working relationships with organizations and business around the state
  • Familiarity with the political landscape of California strongly preferred
  • An ability to travel to Sacramento as needed, with occasional travel to Southern California
  • A deep commitment to the mission of the BlueGreen Alliance
