Job Description: 

The communications assistant helps with the implementation of the organization’s strategic communications program, which is designed to effectively describe and promote CORAL and its conservation work to supporters, funders, board members, the general public, and the media.

The communications program comprises internal communications, public and media relations, website development and management, electronic and print publications, creation of brochures and marketing collateral, and management of the communications archives and photo/video databases.

The communications assistant will also assist other departments, including development, program, and administration.

This position is full-time, projected to last through October 5, 2012.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
• Produce E-Current, CORAL’s monthly electronic newsletter, including formatting the newsletter in iContact and for the website, sending the email to CORAL contacts and leads, and promoting the newsletter online.
• Update content on CORAL’s website.
• Manage CORAL’s social networking portals on a regular basis, including posting and responding to comments/requests on Facebook, YouTube, and any future websites.
• Serve as backup for data entry and other development database processing.
• Promote and manage the bi-monthly CORAL E-Current Photo Contest, including logging entries, coordinating judging, processing the winner, and posting the winning photo on the website.
• Assist in the production of press releases, the quarterly print newsletter, the annual report, the annual calendar, email blasts, fundraising invitations, brochures, and other marketing collateral.
• Answer and direct telephone calls; greet visitors and vendors.
• Serve as primary contact for CORAL volunteers and manage volunteer communications and database.
• Archive incoming (print and electronic) media hits following communications protocols: create and store PDFs, scan and file articles, and attach files to media contacts within the database.
• Maintain the photography database: communicate with photographers by phone and email, obtain and process license agreements, upload photographs, and store contact and keyword information.
• Assist the communications manager and development department with mailings and other administrative duties as requested.

Qualifications:

Minimum education required:
Bachelor of Arts degree, preferably in communications, public relations, journalism, writing, new media, or related area.

Minimum experience required:
• Must have a passion for CORAL’s mission to save coral reefs for future generations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with excellent editing/proofreading skills.
• Ability to write clearly, persuasively, and effectively within the established tone of the organization in a variety of written and electronic formats.
• Ability to manage multiple projects with considerable deadline pressure and constantly shifting priorities.
• Proven success with website development projects.
• Must be comfortable communicating with a variety of people in a professional manner, from CEOs to international field staff to CORAL supporters to the UPS driver.
• Must be a self-starter who displays enthusiasm, interest, and initiative in taking on disparate projects as requested.
• Comfort and familiarity working in a professional, but casual, office environment.
• Must be a creative thinker and open-minded problem solver with a can-do attitude.
• Expertise with Microsoft Word and Excel on PC platforms.

Specific knowledge, skills, or abilities requested:
• Software expertise: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, and InDesign.
• Database/email software knowledge: Salesforce, iContact
• Strong familiarity with HTML, Drupal, or other web content management systems.

Physical Demands:
• Ability to sit in front of a computer for up to eight hours per day and carry boxes of printed materials of up to 25 pounds.

This is a full-time, temporary position that reports to the development director.
