Job Description: 

Founded in 1971 and with headquarters in San Francisco, NatureBridge is the largest residential environmental education partner of the National Park Service. Our mission is to inspire personal connections to the natural world and responsible actions to sustain it. NatureBridge currently operates in five national parks: Yosemite National Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Olympic National Park, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and Channel Islands National Park. Each year, NatureBridge serves 30,000 participants from K-12 schools through residential experiential science, youth leadership, and teacher training programs. NatureBridge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Position Summary

NatureBridge is seeking an experienced, dynamic, entrepreneurial leader to bring the organization’s established grants program to the next level. The Grants Manager leads and manages NatureBridge-wide grants efforts and is responsible for securing support from foundations, governmental agencies, and corporations to meet the organization’s operating and capital needs. 

NatureBridge has an opportunity to more effectively utilize institutional fundraising strategies to increase its impact due to a new name and brand identity, an emerging national vision, a capital campaign, and several new initiatives.

The Grants Manager is the day-to-day operational lead for the institutional fundraising team and directly contributes to achieving this vision. This position supervises a professional staff of regionally-focused Grants Officers. Additionally, the Grants Manager conducts prospect research, writes, and manages grant proposals; assists in planning and budget development; and writes other materials as needed. This position reports to the Director of Development in the San Francisco office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include working with the Development Department and other departments to accomplish the goals and objectives of the position. Duties include (but are not limited to) the following:

Management

  • Create and manage annual institutional fundraising plans in partnership with the Individual Giving Manager and Director of Development
  • Manage and facilitate activities of the Grants Team, comprised of four regional Grants Officers as well as intermittent contract grant writers
  • Create and manage the Grants Team expense budget and contributed revenue projections
  • Serve as liaison for the Grants Team with the Directors of the four national park campuses


Fundraising

  • Lead institutional giving for national initiatives that align with NatureBridge’s Strategic Plan
  • Manage a robust grant portfolio of foundation, corporation, and government funders
  • Identify and research foundation, corporation, and government funding prospects for national initiatives and NatureBridge-wide programs
  • Identify and research foundation, corporation, and government funding prospects for NatureBridge’s Yosemite environmental education center capital campaign
  • Review requests for proposals and submit grant applications and proposals to federal, state, and private sources
  • Monitor grant awards including grant agreements and reporting requirements
  • Conduct stewardship activities to build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with institutional funders


Other

  • Work with the Director of Development and Individual Giving Manager to develop and implement corporate engagement strategies and programs
  • Maintain necessary database records, files, reports, and resource materials pertinent to grant activities
  • Create and maintain systems that promote good working relationships with program staff to ensure clear and timely communication for grant proposal development and/or reporting requirements
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports (both internal and external)
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience, Competencies, and Education

The ideal candidate can work independently, manage complex and sensitive issues, prioritize, multi-task, and demonstrate the following:

  • Commitment to the mission of NatureBridge
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • At least five years of professional grant writing with demonstrated ability to write successful six- figure+ grant proposals
  • At least three years of experience leading and managing staff
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Keen attention to detail plus solid analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor
  • Experience using a comprehensive development database (Raisers Edge preferred)
