Job Description: 

The Hoosier Environmental Council (HEC) is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to manage and lead the organization’s development, outreach, and marketing efforts. This senior leader will be responsible for all fundraising execution and planning in addition to managing the marketing/outreach efforts for HEC. The ideal candidate has substantial relationship building experience, proven success securing funds for an
organization, and a background in donor/organization messaging.

About the Hoosier Environmental Council
The Hoosier Environmental Council is Indiana’s leading statewide environmental educator and advocate, working on air & water quality, wilderness protection, sustainable agriculture, green energy and 21st century transportation.

The Development and Marketing Director will be responsible for developing and implementing all fundraising strategies for our $700,000 budget. Substantive experience in major donor & annual fund development; we’re looking for someone who is entrepreneurial, creative and a great project manager and communicator.

This position will report to the Executive Director and responsibilities will include:

  • Developing annual and long-term development and marketing strategies.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors through cultivation and stewardship, and engagement of other individual donors, green-minded corporate members, and foundations. Methods of approach may include event planning strategy and design, engaging volunteers in donor cultivation, and managing integrated direct mail/social media campaigns.
  • Supervise the Development Coordinator, who generates queries, analyses, mailing lists, and facilitates extensive communication with our donors.
  • Oversee three part-time marketing consultants (a graphic designer, event planner, and video producer) to ensure the integration of marketing and development efforts.
  • Coordinate grant proposal submissions and foundation relationships with HEC program Staff.
  • Travel – possibly overnight – within Indiana.

Salary will be determined based on experience, and a growth-oriented incentive program will be offered.

Job Requirements
Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with ideally, 4 – 5 years nonprofit development experience in a managerial role.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major and annual gifts from individuals, including high value donor cultivation and stewardship, and facilitate annual campaigns.
  • Demonstrated success in meeting annual fund goals and sponsorships.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing compelling electronic and direct mail campaigns that meet or exceed a budget’s goals in this area.
  • Experience with donor databases, direct mail, social networking, and individual asks.
  • Proficient in donor database management (SAGE is preferred), the Internet, Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience engaging with donor networks outside of Indianapolis.
  • Political fundraising and/or business sales experience.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough, organized and detail-oriented approach to work.
  • Ability to lead multiple long-and short term projects simultaneously, meeting all related deadlines; make decisions and solve problems effectively and creatively.
  • Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to understand and explain the basic science of environmental issues and connects them to the priorities of funders and donors.
  • Ability to interpret and understand the implications of guidelines and
    requirements as set out in grants, estate plans, and donor agreements.
  • Ability to manage and share pertinent information with Staff and Board.
