Job Description:  Overview:

Our Environmental Management group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively. Our staff of professionals includes specialists in marine biology, wetland science, wildlife biology, soil science, fisheries biology, botany, hydrogeology, hydrology, forestry, habitat and ecosystem restoration, permitting, GIS, and Information Management. We help our clients to identify and respond to opportunities and threats within constantly changing regulatory and corporate environments, through active engagement with the public, stakeholder groups, and governmental regulators.

We are currently recruiting for a new member to our Reclamation Team, headquartered out of our Victoria (Sidney), BC office. Our reclamation team has over 30 years of history working in the area of the environmental assessment and reclamation of mining and other industrial developments. Stantec’s team is actively preparing reclamation plans and final closure documentation and conducting reclamation planning, research and operational programs on various mining and industrial projects throughout Canada. We provide solutions to the mining industry, government and First Nations in all areas of land rehabilitation; including baseline studies to reclamation planning and implementation of large-scale land rehabilitation programs.

Responsibilities:

This Ecosystem Restoration Ecologist will join a team that interacts directly with Vegetation and Reclamation team members as well as providing hands-on service to our clientele, working with engineers and planners on environmental assessments in Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Oil sands/ mining monitoring - Vegetation and/or Wildlife
  • Implementing vegetation/wildlife monitoring programs on reclaimed sites
  • Vegetation mapping and the ability to predict target ecosystems
  • Ability to determine land capabilities (forest or wildlife values)
  • Statistical analysis of vegetation/wildlife data compiled using appropriate software
  • Detailed report writing
  • Developing scope of work for monitoring from permit approvals
Qualifications:

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • B.Sc. in Vegetation or Soils ecology or related field with 8 to 10 years of experience; a M.Sc. in Ecosystem Restoration or related field with 4 to 6 years field experience is preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of the mining industry, mining operations and permitting processes required for mine development
  • Considerable experience in the planning and implementation of reclamation research/monitoring and operational reclamation programs on mine sites or other large disturbance resource activities
  • Considerable experience reviewing, analyzing and interpreting reclamation research findings
  • Experience carrying out all aspects of mine project EAs and MAPAs
  • Considerable experience (and interest) in managing all phases of projects
