Job Description:

Environment Maine is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization that works on behalf of our 12,000 members and activists to protect our air, water, and the special places Mainers love and to build an energy future based on the wind, sun, and other clean sources.  We combine independent research, tough-minded advocacy, and citizen organizing and activism to win.

This year, we helped defeat Gov. Paul LePage’s bill to gut Maine’s clean energy standard.  In 2011, Environment Maine spearheaded and passed the first-of-its-kind bill to reduce Maine’s oil dependence – and the bill is now being considered and advanced by advocates in numerous other states.  Our staff and volunteers also collected nearly 30,000 signatures last fall to qualify an initiative for the 2013 ballot to double Maine’s clean energy standard and give a big boost to energy efficiency.

Environment Maine is hiring two Clean Energy Campaign Organizers for three months this summer to (1) strengthen the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a regional program that cuts pollution and accelerates our transition clean energy but that has come under fire recently by the Koch Brothers and other polluters; and (2) build support in Maine for the EPA’s proposal to cut carbon pollution from new power plants.  Major polluters and their allies in Congress have mounted a powerful attack to stop this proposal.

Clean Energy Campaign Organizers will have the opportunity to apply for career positions with Environment America, our federation of 29 state-based groups.

Key responsibilities:

*Outreach to VIPs and organizations to broaden and strengthen our coalition.

*Build and mobilize grassroots support and identify and develop activist leaders.

*Serve as our public spokesperson through media events, news releases, and other media tactics.

*Lobby state and federal decision-makers.

*Draft fact sheets, media materials, email alerts, and other materials.

*Raise money to support the work by canvassing for eight days over the course of the summer.

Requirements:

We’re seeking college graduates or graduating seniors who are ready to commit their time, skills, and passion to grassroots political action on behalf of the environment.  We’re looking for people who understand that we need to build and wield political power if we’re going to make a real difference for the planet.  We look for smarts, academic excellence, leadership experience, top-notch written and verbal skills, and an eagerness to learn.  If you’ve worked with an environmental or political group before, even better.

Location: Portland, Maine.

Salary: Pay for the positions will be based on a three-month salary of $5,940.

To Apply: Send your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest in working with Environment Maine to info@environmentmaine.org.
