Job Description: 

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is a national nonprofit organization advocating healthier lifestyles by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Founded in 1986, RTC is one of the most respected trail advocacy organizations in the nation with more than 150,000 members and supporters. After helping create more than 20,000 miles of rail-trail during the last 25 years, RTC has an ambitious goal for the future: By 2020, 90 percent of Americans will live within three miles of a trail system. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in the Midwest, Northeast, West and Florida.

Job Location:

This position is located in RTC's national office in the West End/Foggy Bottom area of Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible by Metro's Red, Orange and Blue lines.

Job Duties: 
Responsible for significantly increasing philanthropic contributions from major donors, including individuals, foundations and corporations. Specific responsibilities include:
 
• Working with the Vice President of Development and Communications to create and implement a multi-year strategy for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major donor prospects and current donors;
• Manage a personal portfolio of 75+ donors and help senior and field staff manage their donor portfolios;
• Working with program department staff and the TrailLink.com team to prepare letters of inquiry, proposals, progress reports and budgets. Processing grants and sponsorship acknowledgements and implementing recognition activities;
• Conducting donor and prospect research;
• Participating in creating, refining and adapting the RTC case for giving, as necessary;
• Creating and maintaining a master calendar that will include grant submission and reporting deadlines; cultivation and solicitation mailings; and foundation, corporation and major donor cultivation and stewardship visits;
• Arranging and accompanying the president, board members and senior staff on visits to major donors; 
• Maintaining and managing major donor and prospect data and files;
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
None; this position will report directly to the Vice President of Development and Communications.

Job Requirements/Qualifications: 
Bachelors degree required. Must possess superior writing and editing skills, with a minimum of three years experience in working with major donors, developing cultivation strategies and soliciting and closing $10,000+ gifts. Must be a strong team player with the leadership skills to motivate others to be the same. Must have excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage people and projects to achieve multiple deadlines. Must have strong interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with a wide variety of individuals. Knowledge of major donor development and foundations is essential. Knowledge of conservation, land use or transportation issues a plus. Travel required.

Work Environment: 
Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
