Under the supervision of the AMC North Country Youth Programming Director, this multi-faceted position will manage and develop AMC's Teen Wilderness Adventures program, coordinate education outreach efforts in communities local to Pinkham Notch and the Highland Center through the Community Partnerships for Youth program, and assist A Mountain Classroom Program Coordinators with program administration and logistics. This is a full-time year-round exempt position based at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center in New Hampshire.
The Teen Wilderness Adventures Program offers multi-element, wilderness trips to youth aged 12 – 18 years during the summer season. Trips range in length from 5 to 23 days, combine different outdoor elements such as backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, and rock climbing throughout the White Mountains region of northern New Hampshire, the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire, the Maine coast, Western Maine, and the 100-mile Wilderness region of Maine.
The Community Partnerships for Youth program seeks collaborations with targeted Coos County schools and community organizations for the education and development of youth. This position is responsible for working with local communities and schools to dovetail their youth development needs with the programmatic aim and resources of the AMC. The AMC has a goal of working with schools to offer hands-on, inquiry-based programming that meets NH Science Frameworks. The Education Programs Coordinator will develop and deliver both AMC and non-AMC programming and resources for the local communities.
Responsibilities
Teen Wilderness Adventures:
- Develop and manage the delivery of Teen Wilderness Adventures programs.
- Working under the direct supervision of the North Country Youth Programming Director, ensure the program strategy is fiscally responsible, consistent with the AMC mission, and appealing to the identified target audiences.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and prepare program summary reports as needed.
- Supervise, evaluate and train the Teen Wilderness Adventures seasonal field staff. Monitor programs through field checks, instructor de-briefs and participant evaluations.
- Supervise the summer seasonal Teen Wilderness Adventure Logistics Coordinator.
- Under the direct supervision of the North Country Youth Programming Director and with the help of the A Mountain Classroom Coordinators, design and implement staff training for program field instructors.
- Coordinate all program logistics with other AMC North Country departments, including transportation, food, lodging, meeting spaces, etc.
- Work with other North Country Education staff to insure smooth delivery of program operations.
- Coordinate all 3rd party program logistics such as camping reservations and outside contractors.
- Perform on-call responsibilities for the program on a rotating basis with other North Country education staff people. Bears primary responsibility for coordinating field evacuations and support of instructors.
- Work with AMC's marketing department to create a program brochure and web catalog in a timely manner and assist with various marketing initiatives for the program.
- Represent the AMC and the Teen Wilderness program at camp fairs and other marketing venues.
Community Outreach Coordinator/Educator:
- Assist the North Country Youth Programming Director's work within the surrounding communities to foster relationships between schools and youth organizations and others to increase resources in the schools for outdoor and environmental education.
- Work to foster networking among community resources to increase youth development efforts.
- Work with the A Mountain Classroom Coordinators to integrate new programming with local schools into the existing A Mountain Classroom schedule.
- Use existing A Mountain Classroom curriculum to develop hands-on, inquiry-based programs that meet the NH Science Frameworks.
- Deliver free or highly subsidized day programs to local NH communities and develop and deliver programs to local schools and after school programs. Promote programming to local schools to reach a goal of 200 bed nights per year at AMC facilities, including continuing existing overnight programming with Milan, Jefferson, White Mountains Regional, and Groveton.
- Offer teacher development training in environmental science topics that meet the NH Science Frameworks.
Other Duties:
- Teach residential A Mountain Classroom courses as needed.
- Assist A Mountain Classroom Coordinators in field emergencies, staff training and in the support of field instructors.
- Perform on-call duties for North Country youth programs on a rotating basis with coworkers through out the year. May fill in for sick or injured field instructors for all North Country Youth programs.
- Work with a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Actively contribute to and support the cohesive operation of all North Country facilities. Represent the Teen Wilderness program and the AMC professionally to the general public, especially to local communities. Work collaboratively with other North Country staff to maintain high program quality in all youth programming and participate in maintaining administrative coverage for programs.
Employment Qualifications
- BA/BS required in environmental education, environmental studies, outdoor leadership and recreation, or related field preferred; or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2-3 years experience teaching outdoor/environmental education for teens and young adults; more experience preferred.
- Ability to promote staff development and teamwork. Cooperative approach to working with entire education staff and others in a large and diverse organization.
- Excellent organizational skills, written skills, and oral presentation skills.
- Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications.
- Current/Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
- Physical Requirements: Must be capable of safely traveling alone in the backcountry long distances during all seasons and weather conditions. Must be able to carry up to 40+ pounds of equipment backpacking with ease.
- The Appalachian Mountain Club has zero tolerance for child abuse or placing children in danger. The AMC requires all employees who work in a program or facility which serves children, disabled persons, or the elderly to have a criminal record check performed on their name.
