Job Description: 

The State Director of Philanthropy is responsible for the design and implementation of all fund raising activities to support The Trust for Public Land’s land conservation activities in Tennessee. The State Director of Philanthropy works closely with the State Director and the Divisional Director of Philanthropy to develop fund raising goals and projections and to build a major gifts program with a special focus on individual giving. This position also works closely with the State Office project and administrative staff, Divisional project and administrative staff, and TPL National philanthropy staff, and interacts closely and frequently with donors and Advisory Council volunteers. The State Director of Philanthropy reports to the Divisional Director of Philanthropy.

Essential Functions

  • 50% Donor Management
    • Manages a portfolio of about 75 donors and prospects with an emphasis on individual major donor prospects, and especially on donor identification. Includes donor visits, field trips, and solicitations. Creates engagement strategies, leads cultivation teams, and writes solicitation letters and proposals. Promotes planned giving.
    • Involves peer volunteers, leadership, senior management, and project staff in cultivation as needed.
  • 50% Philanthropy Oversight and Advisory Board
    • Oversees fundraising activities for the state, and leads philanthropy work with the Advisory Council
    • Leads the development and implementation of a state-wide philanthropy plan. Includes developing an annual philanthropy action plan, philanthropy revenue and expense budgets, and annual and 3-5 year fundraising goals. Works with State Director to identify gift opportunities in the state. Provides oversight and leadership in identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual major donors and maintenance and growth of foundation and corporate donors. Oversees planning and implementation of focused donor events.
    • Partners with Tennessee State Director and Advisory Board Chair on the philanthropy-specific activities, including the identification and cultivation of new Board members with high capacity and overseeing the philanthropy-related activities of the Board. Works with Advisory Board members as peer cultivators as appropriate.
    • Liaison with Marketing in developing fundraising materials as needed. Manages donor communications in coordination with Philanthropy and Marketing departments.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of fund-raising experience, including direct major gift solicitations.
  • Demonstrated experience with volunteer boards
  • Bachelors degree required. MA preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience using Window-based philanthropic database program.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with organizational skills and attention  to detail. Experience in writing grant proposals or other fundraising materials helpful.
  • Available for significant travel (up to 30%, most locally).
  • Knowledge of and experience with state philanthropic communities
  • Strong interest in and commitment to land conservation.
