Job Description:  Overview:

Our Environmental Services group is dedicated to managing environmental issues professionally and proactively. Our staff of professionals includes specialists in surficial geology, terrain sciences, wetland science, wildlife biology, soil science, air and noise modeling, agrology, fisheries biology, hydrogeology, hydrology, forestry, habitat and ecosystem restoration and regulatory permitting.   We help our clients to identify and respond to opportunities and threats within constantly changing regulatory and corporate environments.  Our team members have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects for a wide range of clients.  These projects follow the full life cycle of the project from initial impact assessment and regulatory applications through construction, operation and site remediation and reclamation.    We are seeking exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in the natural sciences and engineering to join our team and advance their career.

Stantec’s Terrain Sciences Group is actively involved in a number of challenging earth science projects ranging from rail, pipeline, road and transmission routing to aggregate inventories and landslide and geohazard mapping and assessment.  The current projects are located in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nunavut, Yukon, British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador as well as internationally in California and Peru. 

 

We have an immediate opening for an Intermediate Surficial Geologist/Terrain Scientist.  

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducting airphoto interpretation and classification of unique landscapes and landforms using 3D imagery at a variety of scales
  • Conducting field inventories in support of mapping exercises
  • Data compilation and management and interpreting data for various end-uses
  • Acting as field crew lead and ensuring Health and Safety protocols are met
  • Interacting and communicating effectively within multi-disciplinary teams 
  • Interacting with and developing excellent relations with clients, regulators and stakeholders
  • Ensuring QA/QC requirements and procedures are adhered to
  • Preparing and reviewing reports, proposals and presentations
Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in Earth Sciences or related field (B.Sc. + experience will be considered)
  • Experience in conducting and coordinating field work in remote and harsh environments
  • Strong data analysis and technical reporting skills
  • Knowledge of GIS is considered an asset
  • Understanding of the regulatory environment in Alberta and British Columbia
  • Eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist (APEGGA) or as a Professional Agrologist (AIA)
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of advanced mapping of glacial and/or non-glacial environments using aerial photographs in 3D
  • Mapping of surficial materials, landforms and geomorphic processes at a variety of scales ranging from 1:50,000, 1:20,000 and 1:50,000 to as large as 1:500
  • Mapping of  landslide hazards and/or permafrost environments
  • Route identification, including pipeline, rail, transmission line and roads
