DEPARTMENT: Administration
LOCATION: Minneapolis
FLSA: Exempt - Regular Full-time
DEADLINE: February 20, 2012

REPORTS TO: The executive committee through the chair of the board and with approval of the board.

POSITION SUMMARY: Provides overall leadership and management of the organization's operations and works in partnership with others to plan and actualize its future. Oversees growth of the organization's financial base, its programs, its work through governmental and non-governmental partnerships, and its credibility and reach through science-based education and information programs, locally, nationally and globally.

The position is based at 3410 Winnetka Ave. No., Minneapolis, MN 55441.

Positions currently reporting to Executive Director:

  • Director of Education in Ely, MN
  • Finance and Operations Director, Communications Director and Development Director in Plymouth, MN

 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Applies to all Employees

  • Carries out the mission: The International Wolf Center advances the survival of wolf populations by teaching about wolves, their relationship to wild lands and the human role in their future.
  • We advocate for the wolf only through education and by providing a forum for dialogue on wolf issues.
  • Represents the International Wolf Center in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current members, donors, visitors, vendors and the communities we serve. Interacts effectively with diverse staff, interns, volunteers and other customers of our services
  • Learns and uses operating practices of the Center
  • Handles confidential information with tact and discretion

Leadership

  • Develops organizational three-year and long-range goals with the Board of Directors; develops annual goals and departmental objectives with staff: carries out plans and policies authorized by the Board; and assesses organizational results
  • Allocates resources to employ, promote, discipline and deploy staff to translate Board policies into action and to meet Board goals
  • Develops, manages and reports on organizational budget, cash flow and monthly financials
  • Leads a talented and highly collaborative team of staff, Board and volunteers and builds on the successes of the past 25 years by visualizing and actualizing opportunities for sustainable growth
  • Ensures the Center operates in a fiscally responsible manner within the board-approved budget and in accordance with accepted non-profit financial accounting practices
  • Evaluates and systematically adjusts the allocation of organizational resources in order to reach stated goals and objectives
  • Provides direct oversight and support for the work of the positions reporting to the executive director
  • Sustains a culture of effective communication and appropriate levels of input and influence for staff and Board in decision-making
  • Provides or delegates responsibility for technological advances
  • Establishes responsible environmental practices within the organization
  • Informs the Board on the condition of the organization, its programs and progress toward meeting objectives and financial plans
  • Conducts official correspondence of the organization jointly with the board and executes legal documents jointly with designated officers
  • Oversees the maintenance of official records and documents and ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations

Fundraising

  • Pursues and supports funding opportunities with sponsors and partners
  • Promotes diversely funded operations and fosters endowment growth
  • In collaboration with the Development Director, cultivates major donors to encourage their contributions and commitment to the Center

Relationships and Audiences

  • Establishes and nurtures beneficial relationships with appropriate partners, sponsors, community groups and organizations
  • Seeks strategic local, national and international opportunities for diverse growth and advancement of the mission
  • Oversees major projects, such as exhibit development, symposia, facility upgrades and legislative initiatives
  • Oversees liaison with landlords, including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
  • Serves as a public face of the organization to members, media, legislature as well as key agencies and organizations

Education

  • Oversees fulfilling the mission of the Center through our most important tool, education
  • Encourages staff to seek educational opportunities with non-traditional (hunters, ranchers and developers) and multi-cultural audiences leading to enhanced co-existence between humans and wolves
  • Directs staff to identify and implement outreach opportunities in metropolitan areas, especially in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN

Reports to Board

  • Understands and follows current board policy and policy as it arises from board or executive committee actions
  • Participates in one's own annual performance and compensation review as conducted by the Executive Committee and Board and is contributed to by the staff
  • Participates or delegates participation by staff on board committees, except for the Nominating Committee
  • Acts as key staff to the Board and the Executive Committee
  • Sustains a working relationship with the board chair and a collegial relationship with board members, upholding policy on board-staff communications

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability desired in an executive director.

  • Degree and five years of experience in education, biology, wildlife, business administration or related fields
  • A passion for conservation and connecting people with the environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders and to collaborate to achieve desired outcomes
  • Preferred experience and interest in fundraising, including effective relationship-building with donors
  • Leadership which builds trust and demonstrates respect
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, evolving process with staff, and to maintain communication and rapport between two offices
  • Ability to think creatively and problem-solve with others
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Interest in and knowledge of the potential benefits of technology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to derive and manage complex annual budgets
  • Experience and ability to effectively delegate
  • Ability to oversee complex projects such as remodeling, and exhibit development

Physical Requirements
The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be able to travel between two Center facilities and other meeting locations to conduct work in a timely manner; must possess or be able to obtain a Minnesota driver's license and to drive a vehicle
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods, be able to type and use a computer, printer, copier, telephone and fax
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly so as to be able to respond to telephone and in-person communications and carry on conversations
  • Must be able to fill out forms correctly, proofread documents and maintain records
  • Must be able to work with the public in a public setting
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies appropriately

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The employee regularly works in an office environment with minimal to moderate noise level. Travel conditions may require the employee to stay in facilities considered rustic and where shared occupancy may be necessary.
