Job Description:  Overview:

Stantec’s Environmental Management team in Calgary provides a wide range of environmental services in a variety of sectors, including pipelines, electrical transmission, power plants, oil sands, wind farms, and conventional oil and gas. We help our clients to identify and respond to opportunities and threats within constantly changing regulatory and corporate environments. Our more than 200 professional, technical and support staff provide extensive knowledge and capability in both regulatory planning and scientific specialties. We lead environmental assessments, regulatory strategy, public hearings, and permitting and licensing in support of regulatory applications. Our team members may be involved in air quality studies, noise impact assessments, fisheries, vegetation and wildlife studies and assessments mapping and modeling. We are seeking exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our team and advance their career.

The Aquatics Team has an opportunity for a Senior Fish Biologist in the Calgary office. The successful candidate will join our team of fisheries biologists and aquatic specialists leading assessments of fish and aquatic communities and their habitat for a variety Oil Sands, pipeline and mining projects. This senior professional would play a key role in managing and completing environmental assessments, mentoring and supervising more junior staff and developing business.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide technical leadership in the design of aquatic studies, implementation of field sampling protocols, analysis of statistics and preparation and review of reports;
  • Lead, manage, design and conduct aquatic resource assessments and related studies for multi-disciplinary projects in the oil & gas, mining, power and pipeline sectors;
  • Lead, manage and prepare aquatic resources components of environmental impact assessments;
  • Develop fish habitat No Net Loss compensation strategies and compliance monitoring according to federal and provincial legislation and permit requirements;
  • Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget;
  • Contribute to and lead business development activities, including proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with clients and prospective clients;
  • Interact and interface with clients and environmental regulators;
  • Provide supervision, training, technical direction and mentoring to more junior staff; and
  • Participate in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work.
Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • University degree in Biology, Ecology or Environmental Sciences;
  • Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s degree with 10 years experience in environmental consulting or equivalent;
  • Knowledge and experience working within the various provincial and federal environmental assessment frameworks (e.g. ERCB, EPEA, NEB, CEAA).
  • Experience leading, managing and conducting aquatic resources, fish habitat and fish community assessments;
  • Experience developing and monitoring fish habitat compensation;
  • Demonstrated project management skills;
  • Experience with management and supervision of field crews;
  • Experience with positive face-to-face interactions with government, clients and environmental regulators;
  • Experience with design and implementation of environmental sampling and monitoring protocols for water, fish, fish habitat, sediments and benthic invertebrates;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to respond to clients, stakeholders and colleagues; and
  • Work well in team environments.
