Provide professional leadership to the Department of Veterinary Medicine and assure high-quality veterinary care and treatment to wildlife patients, supervise veterinary intern and veterinary extern students, oversee veterinary technicians and wildlife rehabilitators in their working capacity within the hospital, provide outreach support to state wildlife rehabilitators and governmental wildlife and public health organizations, conduct approved research and clinical studies, and represent the organization, internally and externally, in a manner that reflects well on the organization and furthers the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s mission and goals.
Key areas of responsibility • Provide state-of-the-art veterinary care to wildlife patients each year. [Will require regular overnight on-call responsibilities.] • Work closely and cooperatively with other veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and wildlife rehabilitators. • Play a leadership role in the management of the Wildlife Center’s clinical program, including supervising and mentoring other members of the staff and providing a positive professional role model for all department personnel. • Provide leadership and a positive role model in mentoring and providing professional development opportunities, experience, and training for a veterinary intern, fourth-year veterinary students, and others. • Schedule veterinary externships and interact and recruit new students. • Lead or assist in approved research projects that advance wildlife veterinary medicine and the mission of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. • When requested or authorized, serve as a spokesperson or representative for the Wildlife Center with the media, professional organizations, wildlife rehabilitators, organization supporters, and others.
Essential duties and responsibilities* • Provide veterinary medical and surgical care to injured wildlife with the primary goals of educating students and successful release of rehabilitated patients • Timely completion of routine daily patient treatments, including working with students, volunteers, and rehabilitators to coordinate and perform routine morning and afternoon treatments. Keep other staff members informed of changes in patient status during daily rounds and through direct communication. • Deliver lectures on wildlife medicine and disease-related topics to 2nd year veterinary students at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. • Deliver lectures and provide information at the annual WCV rehabilitation conference and assist in wildlife rehabilitation outreach courses around the state as needed. • Assist in the development of new strategies for wildlife disease surveillance and response. Duties may include the research of specific diseases, teaching wildlife disease surveillance techniques to wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians, delivering educational and disease surveillance material to wildlife workers, etc. • Conduct at least one approved original research project that relates to the Wildlife Center of Virginia’s mission statement: Teaching the world to care about and to care for wildlife and the environment. • Organize and advance the Center’s patient facilities in accordance with the Veterinary Strategic Plan, which may include but is not limited to: writing grant proposals, canvassing for equipment or husbandry related materials, contacting new donors, etc., in coordination with the Center’s development department and administration. • Assist with training students (veterinary and veterinary technician) and volunteers, and oversee vet externship program including scheduling of students. • Assist with other duties as assigned, which may include assisting with rehabilitation and technician duties, or other activities required for the efficient and effective operation of the Veterinary Department

Terms of employment • Satisfactory and timely performance of duties and responsibilities. • Salaried position (Year 1 – $38,000; Year 2 – $42,000), five-day work week. Normal working hours 8 am-5:30 pm. • Given the nature of veterinary work, including the lack of predictability associated with patient admissions and veterinary emergencies, it is expected and anticipated that as a salaried employee the veterinary fellow may need to work additional hours beyond the normal working hours to complete essential tasks and responsibilities.
Qualifications • Must have a DVM [VMD] degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school and be eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia. • Clinical experience in wildlife medicine required. • Strong preference given to candidates who are board-certified or eligible for board certification in relevant fields. • Post-doctoral training/graduate degree preferred. • Supervisory and training experience required. • Strong interest in wildlife and working with animals required. • Excellent interpersonal skills; team player with the ability to work independently. • Flexible with the ability to adapt to a dynamic environment. • Even-tempered, ability to remain calm in stressful situations. • Positive attitude and a sense of humor. • Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
