Job Description: 

Position Title:                Stewardship Forestry Technician (two)

Department:                  Conservation

Location:                      Northern NJ,

Reports to:                   Stewardship Project Director - Forester

Job Classification:        Full-time (40 hour week)

 

Job Description:  The Stewardship Forestry Technician will serve as a member of a forest inventory crew collecting data to be used in the development of forest stewardship plans on several large tracts in Northern NJ.  The position’s main responsibilities will include locating predetermined inventory locations in the field using maps, compass, and GPS units, and conducting standard tree mensuration measurements, as well as collecting data on other resources such as shrubs, herbaceous and non-native plants.

 

Other Major Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Stewardship Project Director and Stewardship Project Coordinator to ensure that work is being completed in a timely and efficient manner.  
  • Identifies and explores opportunities to expand NJA conservation programs and mission.
  • Participates and supports departmental staff members with other conservation projects including, but not limited to; tree and shrub planting, tree marking, thinning operations using chainsaws, herbicide applications, wetland or vernal pool construction, wildlife habitat projects, prescribed burning projects and wildlife barrier fence installations. 
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet the needs of the conservation department and organization as required. 
  • Participates with other mission area staff to adopt a "team" approach towards daily operations at the assigned work station.

 

Knowledge/Skills:  

  • Proficiency in the use of ordinary field equipment such as, GPS, compass, diameter tape, clinometers, densitometer, tape measure, data collector, and range finder.  
  • Detail oriented individual is essential. 
  • Possess effective time management skills.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently when necessary. 
  • Computer literacy and working knowledge of a variety of software programs, including standard Microsoft software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Familiarity with forest inventory software.  
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles and upland hardwood silvicultural systems.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation science, with emphasis on ecological forest management.
  • Experience or ability to safely use and maintain forest management tools and equipment, including backpack sprayers, planting bars, shovels, chainsaws, and other power and construction tools.
  • Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as herbicide application, etc.
  • Interest, training, and experience in prescribed fire management is desirable
  • Strong work ethic.
  • A motivated self-starter who is also a strong team player.

 

Qualifications: 

  • B.S. in forestry, natural resources or other closely related field preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of trees and plants in northern NJ, including strong winter ID skills. 
  • Experience with the standard concepts of forest measurements including: point and plot sampling, tree diameter measurements, product classification, merchantable and total tree height determinations, regeneration and understory vegetation assessments.
  • Must be able to perform field work under all types of adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and in rough terrain carrying forestry equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. 
  • Must be willing to travel to different inventory locations throughout New Jersey and work weekends and nights as required. This requires a reliable vehicle and a valid New Jersey Drivers License.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet special needs of the department and the organization.

 

Starting Date: Immediate.

 

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.  Housing may be available.
