Job Description: 

The Division Director of Philanthropy (DDoP) is responsible for managing all fund raising strategies for his/her respective Division. This position has ultimate supervisory authority over the state directors of philanthropy and the institutional giving managers.  He or she will be responsible for overseeing the identification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship of TPL donors and prospects within the division in collaboration with development and key senior staff from other departments.  The position works closely with the Director of Philanthropy, two other Division Directors of Philanthropy, the Director of Major Gifts and the Capital Campaign Director to implement a TPL-wide philanthropy program.

 Essential Functions

  • Directs philanthropy program for the division including major gifts, institutional giving, statewide programs, and overall integration of TPL wide fundraising strategies. Along with all Divisional Philanthropy staff, volunteers, and State and Area Directors, works to identify and cultivate prospects, solicit outright and planned gifts, and recognize and steward donor relationships. Works closely with other philanthropy staff to develop and maintain master lists of donors and prospects.
  • Spends 25% of time on direct fundraising, carries a prospect portfolio of 10-15 high level prospects and raises $1+ million annually
  • Establishes and is responsible for philanthropy revenue goals in the division. 
  • Coordinates philanthropy needs with strategic and annual action plans, revenue and expense projections, working with transaction and program staff to identify program and transaction fund raising needs, and developing fund-raising strategies. 
  • Leads volunteer engagement and solicitation strategies in partnership with State and Area Directors and Philanthropy staff.
  • Serves as a member of the Philanthropy management team to advance the TPL-wide philanthropy program and to integrate philanthropy within the culture of the organization
  • Demonstrates and teaches best practices and upholding highest ethical standards, and mentors and trains staff to do the same.
  • Oversees all donor recognition and acknowledgments for the division and for all donor tracking on Pledgemaker database.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

 Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of experience in nonprofit fund raising, including making direct solicitations, preferably with an environmental or conservation organization.
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices across all disciplines of fundraising (institutional giving, working with volunteers, major gifts, planned giving, etc.)
  • 5 plus years experience in managing fund raising staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. MA preferred.
  • Experience in successfully closing major gifts ($100K +) required.
  • Experience in writing successful grant proposals or other fund raising materials required.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member bringing together a variety of disciplines and departments. Ability to focus efforts and train non-philanthropy staff in the discipline of fund raising as appropriate.
  • Experience working with volunteers, including volunteer boards
  • Experience with fund-raising database programs and how they are used to support fund raising activities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Knowledge of geographically specific philanthropic communities highly desirable.
