The Senior Editor supports national marketing efforts by assigning, researching, writing, editing, and rewriting content for, and overseeing production of, The Trust for Public Land’s publications. The successful candidate will be expected to succeed the departing editor of Land&People, The Trust for Public Land’s twice-yearly national magazine, in the fall of 2012.
Essential Functions
- Assists with editorial and production of Land&People magazine including Annual Report - 50%
- Develop content ideas. Research, write, fact-check, and edit copy.
- Assign, manage and edit freelance writing and publications support
- Supervise designer, oversee photo choice
- Manage budget and relationship with printer, supervise mailing and shipping
- Work with electronic marketing team to support online content related to Land&People stories.
- Other editorial support - 30%
- Research, write, edit, and/or rewrite copy for TPL’s other marketing publications including reports, newsletters, marketing collateral, and other organizational communications products including social media.
- Communication strategy – 20%
- Contribute to communication strategy for TPL print and electronic publications to fulfill organizational marketing goals and initiatives
- Track and review key organizational publication deadlines
- Help develop communication themes across online and print products.
- Responsible for maintaining the voice of the organization
- Collaborates with key stakeholders on communication strategies related TPL initiatives.
Qualifications
- Requires bachelor's degree; advanced degree in journalism or related field a plus
- Minimum 8 years of publishing experience in editing, writing, and production; minimum 5 years experience bringing books and/or magazines from content ideas to distribution
- Vendor management experience a must, including print production
- Excellent research, interviewing, writing, and editing skills
- Experience writing for nonprofit marketing/fund-raising communications
- Passion for TPL’s mission a must, in depth knowledge of conservation issues a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and experience working successfully as part of an editorial team. Experience managing an editorial calendar preferred.
- Ability to work under pressure, set and meet deadlines.
- Ability to establish professional relations inside and outside of organization.
