Job Description: 

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is a national nonprofit organization advocating healthier lifestyles by creating a nationwide network of public trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Founded in 1986, RTC is one of the most respected trail advocacy organizations in the nation with more than 150,000 members and supporters. After helping create more than 20,000 miles of rail-trail during the last 25 years, RTC has an ambitious goal for the future: by 2020, 90 percent of Americans will live within three miles of a trail system. RTC is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional offices in California, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Job Location:
This position is located in RTC's national office in the West End/Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and is easily accessible by Metro's Red, Orange and Blue lines.

Job Duties: 
The Healthy Communities Manager will be responsible for managing key health-focused activities designed to meet RTC's mission of building healthier places for healthier people. These duties include:

• Facilitating and/or managing relationships with:
    ◦ public health organizations, agencies and companies;
    ◦ business interests that benefit from and support the creation of opportunities for         healthy outdoor activity; and
    ◦ organizations representing local governments.
• Assisting field outreach to build similar relationships at the local and state levels.
• Coordinating meetings of partner organizations and managing communications among partners.
• Engaging in advocacy efforts at the intersection of public health, the built environment and trails/active transportation.
• Generating materials that enable partners to effectively advocate for active transportation, and maintaining robust persuasive online content. 
• Assisting in identifying opportunities for collaborative research.
• Representing RTC at meetings, presentations and other events as relevant.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
None. This position will report to the Director of Policy Outreach.

Qualifications: 
The ideal candidate will have:

• A bachelor's degree in public health, active living or related field; a graduate degree is preferred.
• At least two years relevant work experience.
• An understanding of federal health policies, funding sources and regulations.
• Experience organizing coalitions or partners, particularly in an online context.
• An understanding of how to apply economic tools and policies to foster active communities.
• Excellent organizational, writing and communication skills.
• A commitment to encouraging active living, especially routine walking and bicycling.


Work Environment: 
Normal office setting with low to moderate noise level.
