The Administrative Assistant position is available in our Berkeley Field Office, located in the David Brower Center.  This position offers an ideal opportunity to be part of a vibrant community of like-minded individuals and organizations while contributing to important state and national work restoring and protecting America’s rivers.  The David Brower Center is one of the Bay Area’s most advanced green buildings. The nonprofit center is an inspiring home for environmental and social action, housing organizations working for environmental and social justice. It is a place designed to foster collaborations, engage new people in advocacy and facilitate cross-sector communication and partnerships. Tenants include national and international groups and activists working on everything from sustainability education in schools to healthy river systems, ecological diversity to the protection of regional agriculture.

JOB SUMMARY:The California Flood Management Administrative Assistant position is a part time position approximately 16 hours per week.  The Assistant will help American Rivers’ California flood management program protect and restore floodplains in the Sacramento-San Joaquin river and delta system, promote opportunities for Central Valley communities to recreate on Central Valley rivers, and promote a river stewardship ethic among California decision makers. The Flood Management Administrative Assistant will report to the program Director and will work closely with the Associate Director of California Operations in the Nevada City office.

American Rivers’ vision is to restore vibrant river corridors across the Central Valley to solve two of the region’s most persistent problems – devastating floods and declining fisheries. Expanding floodways will restore fish and bird habitat, protect communities from flooding, improve reservoir flexibility and associated water supply reliability, and enhance the quality of life for residents of the valley. American Rivers is building its capacity to take best advantage of four interrelated forums over coming years to restore Central Valley fish and bird habitat, improve water supply security, and protect communities from flooding, including the Central Valley Flood Management Plan, the Bay Delta Conservation Plan, the Delta Stewardship Council and the Delta Plan, and the State Water Resources Control Board.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Filing: Organize paper and digital files.
  • Office management tasks: Ensure that office equipment is properly functioning and coordinate procurement of maintenance, supplies, and equipment as directed by supervisor.
  • Clerical: Word processing, copy editing, and proof reading as directed.
  • Scheduling: Assist program Director in scheduling of meetings and calendar management.
  • Research and Writing:  Research specific questions as directed by supervisor and draft memos, fact sheets, and press releases.
  • Attend public meetings:  Attend public meetings when necessary and specifically directed by supervisor.
  • Coordination:  Coordinate partner meetings and collaborative efforts between numerous organizations to draft documents.
  • Contract management:  Assist program Director and Associate Director of California Operations in processing and tracking contracts and invoices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experienced, organized and mature individual who can work collegially.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Initiative, coupled with creative and strategic thinking.
  • Good sense of humor.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The position is part-time at approximately 16 hours per week.  Salary is commensurate with experience.  Part-time employees working less than 24 hours per week are not entitled to benefits.
