JOB SUMMARY: The Associate Director of Communications position is based in our Washington, DC headquarters and reports to the Senior Director of Communications.  The position is responsible for implementing communication strategies to advance the organization’s mission. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented, high-energy professional who is interested in making a difference in the field of environmental conservation.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement communications and advocacy plans to advance the organization’s mission.
  • Work to identify and seize media/visibility opportunities.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Communications to coordinate strategy, set goals, and prioritize efforts.
  • Write and edit materials, including web and social media content, press releases, press statements, talking points, pitch memos, action alerts, newsletter content, brochures, fact sheets, and other publications.
  • Assist staff members in creation of presentations and speeches, and in preparing for media interviews.
  • Serve as liaison between American Rivers and Capitol Hill press offices.
  • Organize press conferences and other media events.
  • Track, report, and analyze results to optimize results.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4-5 years in communications, media relations or similar experience, preferably in conservation, advocacy, or non-profit campaigns.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience on Capitol Hill is preferable, but not required.
  • Highly organized with attention to details and deadlines.
  • Decisive, proactive, and resourceful.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
