Job Description: 

 The Energy Action Coalition Tar Sands Campaign Manager coordinates the Energy Action Coalition’s campaign to stop the Keystone XL Tar Sands pipeline. The Tar Sands Campaign Manager develops and implements online and offline campaign tactics with youth leaders and organizational partners across the country that builds the growing student and youth movement to stop tar sands oil development. This includes coordinating youth turn out to hearings and events in key states, supporting field organizers, and implementing a unified campaign strategy to pressure President Obama to “veto” any approval of the Keystone XL Tar Sands pipeline.

Scope: The Tar Sands Campaign Manager works with Energy Action Coalition partner organizations and youth volunteer leaders to coordinate efforts and build media and grassroots momentum around this campaign.

JOB ACTIVITIES:

  1. Coordinates Energy Action Coalition partner organizations’ field campaigns into a cohesive national youth tar sands strategy that compliments individual organizations strengths.
  2. Develops strategies, organize staff and volunteer efforts, monitors and tracks expenses on the Tar Sands Campaign.
  3. Provide hands on support and management for field organizers in key states.
  4. Coordinates the work of volunteers in key states to implement the Tar Sands Campaign nationally, regionally & locally. Supports and provides professional assistance to volunteer activities.
  5. Plans and coordinates strategy and activities to obtain media coverage in regional and national media outlets. Participates in the development of media campaigns; may represent Energy Action Coalition or Power Shift in the media; promotes volunteer spokesperson media exposure.
  6. Directs the development and preparation of campaign issues information including the writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, organizing toolkits, and educational materials.
  7. Generates blog posts about the campaign and promotion through online social media.
  8. Represents Energy Action Coalition in regional and national Tar Sands coalitions, at regional and national events and to the general public.
  9. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  10. Assists in the development of funding proposals and participates in grant making and solicitation efforts.
  11. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • One-three years experience working in the youth climate movement, environmental movement, political campaigns, or other similar organizations to plan and implement grassroots campaigns.
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively with public, staff and volunteers.
  • Experience in coordinating diverse coalitions of partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated success working with the media and or supporting volunteer spokespeople in strategies to garner media attention.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills - ability to clearly write and explain complex issues and effectively communicate them to youth volunteers and the general public.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of climate change, energy, or related social justice issues.
  • Experience working with “frontline communities” most affected by climate change and dirty energy pollution. Experience working with Environmental Justice organizations and Indigenous/First Nation’s organizations is a plus.
  • Proficient with computer skills including database and word processing. Basic social media and website maintenance skills are a plus.
