Job Description: 

Founded in June 2004 by youth climate leaders, the Energy Action Coalition unites a diversity of organizations in an alliance that supports and strengthens the student and youth clean energy movement in North America. The 50 partners of Energy Action Coalition work together to leverage our collective power and create change for a clean, efficient, just and renewable energy future. Context: The Energy Action Coalition National Divestment Organizer coordinates the Energy Action Coalition campaign to move campus leadership to divest their institutional endowments from coal-powered utilities and coal mining companies. The National Divestment Organizer develops and implements online and offline campaign tactics with students and organizational partners across the country that build the growing student and youth movement to move beyond coal, with a specific emphasis on transitioning campus endowments away from investments in coal utilities or coal companies and toward investments into renewable energy companies.

Scope: The National Divestment Organizer is responsible for recruiting, engaging, and developing student volunteers to run strong local on-campus divestment campaigns. The position works with Energy Action Coalition partner organizations to coordinate efforts and build media and grassroots momentum around this campaign.

JOB ACTIVITIES:

  1. Mobilizes students to become involved in the Coal Divestment campaign. Recruits participants and speaks at various campuses, events and conferences around the country.
  2. Develops strategy, organizes staff and volunteer efforts, monitors and tracks expenses on the Coal Divestment campaign.
  3. Coordinates the work of volunteers to implement Coal Divestment campaigns nationally, regionally & locally.
  4. Plans and coordinates strategy and activities to obtain media coverage in regional and national media outlets. Participates in the development of media campaigns; may represent Energy Action Coalition or Power Shift in the media; promotes volunteer media exposure.
  5. Directs the development and preparation of campaign issues information including the writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, organizing toolkits, and educational materials.
  6. Represents Energy Action Coalition in regional and national coalitions, at regional and national events and to the general public.
  7. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  8. Supports and provides professional assistance to volunteer activities.
  9. Assists in the development of funding proposals and participates in grant making and solicitation efforts.
  10. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • One to three years of experience working with volunteers in the youth climate movement, environmental movement, political campaigns, or other similar organizations to plan and implement grassroots campaigns.
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively with public, staff and volunteers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to clearly write and explain complex issues and effectively communicate them to student volunteers.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of climate change, energy, or related social justice issues.
  • Proficient with computer skills including database and word processing.
