Qualifications:
- The Assistant Director shall be a graduate of an accredited institution and shall hold, at minimum, the baccalaureate degree and shall have demonstrated competence in camp and retreat program leadership and management through previous experience and/or training. An advanced degree would be preferred. Theological training and an understanding of Christian education are also desired. Certification in Camp and Retreat Ministry through the UMC and/or American Camping Association (ACA) Certified Camp Director (CCD) certification is desirable, but not required.
- The Assistant Director should be a person with educational concentration in faith formation, Christian Education, programming, Recreation, Leisure, Education, management or related field.
- The Assistant Director will be a mature adult with an active Christian faith and a commitment to The United Methodist Church and its outdoor and retreat ministries. A person with understanding and sympathy toward the beliefs and practices of The United Methodist Church.
- At least three years full time experience beyond graduation. Experience in camping, religious education, youth ministry, or camp and retreat ministry is desirable
Responsible to Center Director
- The Assistant Director is an employee of Don Lee Center of NC United Methodist Camp & Retreat Ministries, Inc and works under the direction and supervision of the Center Director.
- The Assistant Director will use training and experience for interpersonal skills needed in small-group dynamics, personnel management, motivational speaking, and public relations. This position will require leadership of small groups, managing staff and personnel, speaking in public and planning and leading in public relations.
- The Assistant Director will assist in facility maintenance, food service, health care, and program facilitation and be well skilled in personnel management in order to coordinate program and maintenance with other camp staff and to make major decisions regarding schedules, priorities and repairs needed to fulfill program needs and goals.
- AtDonLeeCenter, the Assistant Director will have shared responsibility for leading, coordinating and managing camp and retreat operation including program, support services and budget to make Center operations responsive to camp and retreat users, within the financial resources available and the policies set by the Board and by various state regulatory agencies. The Assistant Director will be expected to help develop new programming at the Center. The Assistant Director will be responsible for promoting the ministry of the Center and recruiting groups to use the facilities, and will offer program expertise and leadership to groups who request the same. Additionally, the Assistant Director will fulfill other responsibilities beyond the site that may from time-to-time be assigned
- The Assistant Director will assist the Director in all his/her duties. The Assistant Director will be the in-charge person in the absence of the Director.
General Responsibilities
- To sustain the success and tradition of a sixty plus year old program and to take it into the 21 century with new life and effectiveness in helping children, youth, and families build relationships and change lives. To develop a full program of camping and retreat events for the center. To coordinate use of the facility, to staff, and resource as required for all programs.
- To plan with a design team the continuation of camping in the 60 plus year tradition of Don Lee. To develop a curriculum of Christian Community and to train program staff and direct the completion of such a program of Christian nurture and formation for children, youth, and families.
- To recruit, select and train a full seasonal program staff for summer and retreat programs. To direct, inspire and manage that staff through a full season of programs.
- To design and implement a program of camper recruitment and registration. This would include development of publicity and directing actual registration of campers.
- To coordinate along with the Center Director the continual efforts of training and accreditation for all programs, operations and staff members.
- To develop along with the Center Director new programs in response to need and desired mission.
- To oversee with the Center Director the day-to-day operation of the program, facility and operations areas ofDonLeeCenter. To pay particular attention to the development and adherence to an annual budget plan. To operate as a business and facilities manager.
- To work as a member of the Center Program Leadership Team. Provide support to all program areas and general operations support.
Benefits:
(This position provides a housing allowance. There is no on site housing.)
Salary: Starting range is $30,000-$37,000 annually. Actual salary depends on experience and education. Housing allowance is in addition.
