Job Title: Development Director
Team: Development
Reports to: Executive Vice President, Programs and Development
Salary Range: $90,000 - $130,000

Summary
The Development Director is responsible for supporting all Alliance activities related to the development and submission of proposals to restricted funding sources, particularly government and private philanthropic foundations. The tasks to be undertaken by the Development Director will include, but are not limited to: managing the proposal development and submission process, tracking of foundation and government funding opportunities, working with the Alliance program teams to develop new program areas, helping program teams to define and align their program strategies, and overseeing the activities and personnel of the Development team.

The Development Director will work closely with the Alliance’s Senior Fundraising Manager, supporting their efforts to identify new sources of foundation funding and to increase Alliance visibility with Foundation donors. The Development Director will help to align Alliance program strategy with the development strategies articulated by the Foundations and, working closely with the Senior Fundraising Manager, will take a lead role in the production of related foundation proposals.

The position of Development Director requires a high degree of professionalism and an ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders across a range of efficiency topic areas. The candidate must have superior organizational skills, sound judgment and - because a high volume of proposals, correspondence and reports will be developed on an ongoing basis - must possess exemplary writing skills. S/he must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with highly motivated staff in a rapidly growing mission-focused organization.

Reporting
The Development Director serves as the senior member of the Alliance Development team and reports to the Executive Vice President, Programs and Development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Development Director will have a special function to oversee/and provide support for the development of all proposals to be submitted by the Alliance. For this purpose, s/he will:

  • (60%) Work directly with the Alliance program teams leading all aspects related to proposal development and submission: articulating strategy, defining projects, crafting, editing and delivering letters of intent and highly competitive proposals, helping with budgets, writing, editing, reviewing, managing the proposal submissions, and overseeing related tracking and reporting.
  • (30%) In partnership with the Alliance Program Teams, the Development Director will work with program teams to articulate and align their program strategies to best secure current and future funding opportunities. The outcome of these efforts will be program level strategic and operational plans.
  • (10%) Working with the other members of the Development Team, maintain high quality stewardship process for active foundation grants and records, and ensure that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful donor partnerships and compliance with related regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Five years or more of management experience in a business and/or non-profit organization.
  • Five years of direct experience in raising funds from restricted sources.
  • Demonstrated experience in the energy field, with preference for work in energy efficiency-related areas whether business, government or non-profit.
  • Direct experience in supervising employees and/or contractors.
  • Superior writing skills.
  • Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as with individuals are essential.
  • Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective donors, and interact via telephone and in person with institutional representatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated record of success in generating significant commitments from donors.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Education and Experience Required

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, Masters preferred.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification preferred, and/or a minimum 5 years demonstrated successful fundraising experience preferably in an energy-related field or environmental discipline.
