Job Description: 

Position Summary

The Director of Finance and Administration sets Wild Salmon Center financial policy and direction.  S/he has responsibility and authority for directing financial and administrative functions, including finance and accounting, contract administration, information technology (IT), human resources (HR), and volunteer and office management.  The Director ensures compliance with Wild Salmon Center administrative policies, pertinent IRS regulations, GAAP and FASB requirements, and state, local and regulatory reporting rules and regulations.   As a member of the senior management team, the Director works closely with the audit/finance committee of the board of directors and provides support to enhance board governance.  The position requires a broad knowledge of finance, information technology and human resource administration, risk management, and experience in program management.

The Director of Finance and Administration supervises staff in the Finance and Administration department.

Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Provide strategic recommendations to CEO, Executive Vice President and Management Team based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis. 
  • Oversee long-term financial planning and cost management and ensure that all financial and administrative solutions positively support Wild Salmon Center’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.

Financial, Administrative and Risk Management

  • Coordinate the development of annual organizational budgets; monitor progress and present operational budget metrics both internally and externally.
  • Develop and maintain a strong system of internal accounting control; monitor the use of all funds.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions, including financial statements and reports for funding organizations and Wild Salmon Center’s board of directors, budget-to-actual reconciliation, and cash planning/forecasting.
  • Assist auditors with annual audit, overseeing schedule preparation, analysis and resolution of audit differences, and preparation of Form 990.
  • Manage corporate property and liability insurance and claims processing.
  • Review and track financial performance of all significant grants, contracts and contractual obligations of the organization.
  • Oversee Information Technology function and provide strategic guidance to ensure that the resources, equipment, and risk mitigation procedures are in place to meet organizational needs.
  • Oversee the Human Resources function and provide strategic guidance on regulatory compliance, and on developing resources to support Wild Salmon Center in employee hiring and retention, training and development, and performance management.
  • Oversee the Office Management function, including the physical infrastructure, physical plant, and system maintenance (phone system, security, cleaning, supplies, etc.); and the recruitment and use of volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, business or public administration, or related field; MBA and/or CPA certification desirable.  Minimum of eight years management-level experience in finance, human resources and information technology, preferably with non-profit organizations.
  • Strong understanding of how finance works in the non-profit sector, including fund and grants accounting.  Working knowledge of GAAP, GAAS, and FASB regulations affecting non-profit organizations.  Experience with budget, taxation and financial statement preparation. 
  • Experience with developing and implementing polices regarding the hiring, compensation, performance management, discipline and discharge of employees.  Working knowledge of federal and Oregon state employment laws.
  • Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, and manage performance of individuals and teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Proven success in negotiating and conflict management.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with executive management and board of directors.  Must maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sensitivity, tact and discretion with all aspects of work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and business accounting software required; experience with Blackbaud software desirable.
  • A collaborative style, with a strong service mentality.  Demonstrated commitment to conservation issues and the public interest.

Compensation
